Zanu PF finds formula to control opposition: Just lead it yourself THE phrase "the best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves" (often attributed to Vladimir Lenin, although some say it's a misattribution) captures the core tactic of authoritarian control: creating a "controlled opposition" to mobilise in order to immobilise and neutralise dissent. Zimbabwean opposition leaders are now largely at the service of Zanu PF: They mobilise people to immobilise them. This dynamic has transformed from a political theory into a daily reality. Looking at the examples of the MDC and CCC, it has now become clear Zanu PF has systematically engineered the collapse of authentic opposition by effectively pulling the strings of its leadership. Zanu PF captured the MDC through various methods, including infiltration and paying off its leaders, especially under Douglas Mwonzora. It used the same strategy on CCC under Nelson Chamisa. Opposition leaders were paid off and the parties hijacked, and put under Zanu PF proxies to control them from inside. As a result, the current state of Zimbabwean politics offers a textbook study in autocratic survival through infiltration and institutional capture. Zanu PF’s strategy relies on a multi-layered approach to ensure that any threat to its 46-year rule is managed from within State House. The primary mechanism used to dismantle the main opposition CCC is the exploitation of vague party structures, constitution and leadership. Self-styled officials like Sengezo Tshabangu were able to unilaterally "recall" democratically elected opposition MPs, councillors and mayors from their seats. The state apparatus, including parliament, courts and the executive, instantly validated these recalls, replacing authentic leaders with compromised figures. Operating an opposition party in an economy in perpetual tailspin is financially devastating. Zanu PF has leveraged its vast network of wealth and surrogate businessmen to offer opposition figures a choice: state-sanctioned poverty, arbitrary arrests, or luxury vehicles, cash handouts, and guaranteed parliamentary perks. By absorbing these figures into the vast state patronage network, the regime has now erased the line between ruler and dissenter. The opposition's vulnerability stems heavily from its structural flaws and personality cult politics. Leaders like Chamisa use popularity, charisma and personal branding over solid and institutionalised party structures. When a political movement lacks leadership, offices, office-bearers, structures and constitution, as well as a social base, ideological compass and accountability mechanisms, it becomes amorphous; an empty shell. A well-placed infiltrator or a single lawfare ambush can paralyse the entire movement and its leader. With the opposition now safely captured and fragmented, the regime has pushed through authoritarian consolidation. The compromised opposition has colluded in this to protect their own interests or filthy lucre. Only a few have protested in vain. The tragedy of contemporary Zimbabwe is that the traditional political opposition has now been systematically engineered out of existence through transactional politics and incentives. By leading, financing, and judicially validating its own opponents, Zanu PF has ensured total political capture and control. Genuine dissenters are no longer fighting a rival political party; they are now fighting a state-managed theatre troupe wearing opposition colours. For Zimbabweans seeking actual democratic change, the lesson from the CCC and Chamisa saga is clear: Change cannot be achieved through capture-prone political parties or solo double-dealing, deceptive leaders. If a movement can be bought with a luxury SUV, cash or broken by a court order from an opportunist, it is fundamentally unfit to challenge an entrenched autocracy. Change will only come from a new genuine grassroots movement, not parties or leaders prone to transactional politics.
