Defection from authoritarian allies is crucial to stop autocratization or transition back to democracy. In this JoD (free for anyone), I show some successful examples on how can oppositions support and foster loyalty shifts.
Autocrats look invincible until their allies start to walk away. Defections have brought down regimes from Guatemala to Hungary, and they can be engineered: Raise the costs of standing with the autocrat and ease the path out.

Blessed to have worked with THE @JamesSwaffordGA on this as part of the 2026 Summer edition of @PollitikLab. Thx for bringing it, James!
Florida isn't my specialty, but I took a look. Based on the math, I projected that @RepDonaldsPress will take the Florida governorship with 48.3% of the vote.
This ended up being a fun yet challenging project to work on as part of my Grad program.
