Laxman Gangwani: SMN knockdown causes dsDNA breaks?! And activation of DNA damage response pathways. Implications for high sensitivity of terminally differentiated motor neurons to SMN loss. #annualsmaconference #CureSMA

A great session at #annualsmaconference. Reduced mitochondrial transport in SMA motor neurons. Wonder if there's a link there to translation defects at the ER-mito connections? #curesma

Thanks so much for the opportunity to work on such an important problem. Does subcellular RNA localization become disrupted in SMA? If so, does this contribute to motor neuron disfunction? Hopefully these experiments will help answer these questions.
#CureSMA is pleased to announce the second 2019 recipient of the Audrey Lewis Young Investigator Award, Krysta Engel, PhD, at the University of Colorado. To learn about Dr. Engel's project, visit: curesma.org/news/engel-grant…

Figuring out where RNAs are within cells and quantifying them can be tricky. Improved methods are being continuously developed to meet this challenge. Check out this review I wrote that summarizes classical and new techniques to study RNA localization. bit.ly/2LkO2BV
Oh man...really hits you in the feels! Won't give any spoilers but, oof!! What a bunch of story arcs! 💕💔

Ok, one minor spoiler/heads up...for other lebowski lovers out there, watch out for the references 😍😍
What Suja and I are wanting to learn more about is how universities get the word out about how they support the mental health of their staff at all levels. As a postdoc, it seems like gaining awareness of these services is not as straight forward as when I was a grad student.
Does your university/school/department have a handout on mental health services that is given to all trainees? If so, could I see a sample? Please RT.

Cover art...how did autocorrect do that??
When I was in undergrad I named my cat Nero, then in grad school worked on the trigger loop! Life is weird. Also this quote, "where it inhibits an enzyme responsible for protein synthesis; without protein, the cells begin to die" 😕

Three weeks left to apply for our summer internship program for undergrads!
Please RT: Our excellent paid Summer Internship Program for undergrads is accepting applicants for 2019! Deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2019. rnabio.co/summer-interns
SUPER PROUD (and in awe of) @EngelKrysta for receiving a postdoctoral fellowship from @CureSMA. I have no doubt her work on how SMN regulates RNA localization will advance our understanding of SMA. Thanks @CureSMA! – at Colorado, USA

TONS of RNA localization datasets (including ours) have seen mRNAs encoding ribosomal proteins enriched in neuronal projections. Why would that be? Aren't ribosomes assembled in the nucleolus? Finally, an explanation for this bizarre observation! biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/…
