There's been a lot of "design is dead" talk this year.
So at @DesignUpConf last week, @rasagy and I built our workshop around a better question: how does a designer actually navigate this landscape? and what value does a designer still bring to the table?

Last year I attended DesignUp. This year I spoke at it.
One year. No engineering background. No team. ₹3,000. One weekend.
8,000+ garbage reports across all 369 wards of Bengaluru, mapped to the exact official responsible.
It happened because I stopped walking past something.

10 years of @DesignUpConf = 3 days of inspiring ideas, curious conversations, and shirt twins. 😉
The talks give you ideas 💡and the hallways give you people 🫶
It has turned into a yearly reunion of sorts, and I'm not complaining – met old friends, made some new ones, and had a lot of fun. 🥳
Thank you to the team behind it. 👏

@georgeaye's "New Social Contract" talk at @DesignUpConf puts it sharply: without universal long-term care, intergenerational wealth becomes intergenerational debt

The best part about being at @DesignUpConf is the length and breadth of topics. I saw pro AI stances vs exclusively handcrafted work. DUp lets you pick what fits your bill but presents the entire buffet for you to choose from. Love it every single time!

2 really good days at @DesignUpConf
Some insightful sessions and talks, and getting to catch up with people after way too long. Old colleagues, batchmates, and even an old friend from my design college entrance prep days.
Came back with lots to think about :)
… and to conclude, @jdallcaps joins @luckykat to thank attendees, sponsors and volunteers who make the designup the conference it is today - in its 10th successful year. :)
Last on DesignUp stage today - Meet Kimya Gandhi the brilliant typeface designer and partner at Mota Italic who is reimagining Devanagari typography by blending India's rich visual heritage with contemporary global design. #dup26

Two great days at @DesignUpConf !
Apart from listening to some amazing talks, learning from great speakers, and meeting interesting people, one of my biggest takeaways was getting to know my own team better.
I recently joined Rapido, and spending two full days together, away from our usual work, gave me the space to understand what excites them, what they want to learn, where they want to grow, and the kind of designers they want to become.
It also made me think more about what it takes to build a great design team.
It’s not just about hiring great designers or producing great craft. It’s about creating an environment where people have ownership, feel comfortable challenging ideas, have space to experiment and fail, learn from each other, and understand how their work connects to a larger purpose.
Our job isn’t to have all the answers. It’s to create the conditions where the team can find better answers together.
And for that, knowing your people matters.
Their strengths. Their ambitions. Their curiosity. And sometimes, what’s holding them back.
A strong design culture gives people room to grow individually while keeping everyone moving in the same direction.
Because ultimately, great culture builds great teams, and great teams create the space for innovation.
Courage. Connection. And care. Design for the body in the room. Enlightening talk by @alyshanaples #dup26
