After months of work, @KabirHenry and I have launched Lighthouse, a free, open-source, cross-platform app that keeps track of where everything in your home lives. You might remember it from the spoiler post we made when we had finished designing most of it. With him on the design and me on the implementation, we were quite a team!
You add your rooms and the spots inside them, like the top drawer, the pantry shelf or the box in the garage. Then you add what's in each one. Next time you're hunting for your passport or the spare charger, all you do is search.
After months of effort, we took it all the way from initial design, system architecture planning, to a finished app. We designed the pixel-art themed look, went back and forth on every screen, and then built it properly:
β’ π· Photos for items, rooms and locations.
β’ ποΈ More than one home.
β’ πΎ Backup and restore, photos included.
β’ π No accounts: your data never leaves your device!
β’ π± Install it on your phone and use it offline.
It's open source, and we'd love for you to try it and tell us what you think! I, for one, am definitely using Lighthouse to manage my home inventory. π Are you? Links in the thread.

When I was writing Unreal Engine 1, my time was divided as follows:
- Around 30% went to seriously deep coding on hard problems: assembly language texture mappers, C++ BSP trees, data persistence, object oriented systems design, and networking.
- Around 70% was just typing and refactoring large bodies of code needed for a complete engine feature set. This was not hard, and while I was doing it my mind was mostly on the deeper coding topics, thinking and planning for what's next. It didn't feel much different from vibe coding today, except that it was just me typing code on an IBM Model M keyboard rather than prompting it and reviewing the results.
So, it has always seemed perfectly logical that we would rely on AI for that 70%, once the AI could do it with a similar quality standard as we could, which has never been perfection. It came as no surprise that, after a few years of AI model evolution, it was able to take the reigns on that 70% and free up programmers' time for more valuable tasks.
What's more of a surprise is the emergence of AI as a sort of insta-Carmack able to solve hard technical problems quite cleverly and often cleanly, and that it's able to reason about and work in complex 3D scenes both by operating the tools and by directly understanding the raw data files.
I abandoned assembly language in 1998 when out-of-order CPUs made much simpler C/C++ code faster, and never I missed it. If prompting through architectural documents, concept art, and design plans can transcend typing code and tweaking vertices, that will enable developers to spend their time on higher-level, higher value technical and creative tasks.
What matters is the end product, whether it's a game or an engine. Anything developers can do to try out more ideas and make better software and games faster is a win for everyone.

That early version of git ate (destructively destroyed) a week of my work. I didn't touch git again for ten years.
(It has gotten much better)

I have to admit, watched this a few times, especially to the end:) the creativity in the prompting and the model is awesome to see

Bittu who single handedly cleaned the river for eight months was shocked to see it polluted again within a month by the locals.

Remember Bittu Tabahi? The guy who spent 8 months cleaning a river?
He has now shared another heartbreaking video. The Ajnar River, which he worked so hard to clean, is full of garbage again. Plastic bags, flowers and waste are back in the water.
Imagine spending 8 months of your life cleaning a river, only to see people destroy all your hard work in a few weeks.
We celebrate people like him, but we also need to ask ourselves why we keep throwing garbage into the same rivers someone else is working so hard to save.
Cleaning a river takes months. Polluting it takes seconds.
Bittu cannot save our rivers alone. We need civic sense, strict fines for those who dump garbage and a little respect for our environment.

this accounts as wasted day, or days in future if the same case remains
Indian's can't tag GrokBot either and memberships are expensive as compared to US plans
@elonmusk says he will bring affordable @Starlink? even X subscription are expensive here and do not work for us either
