Democracy is worth defending. At Halifax I sat on a panel with General Jennie Carignan, Garry Kasparov and Hanna Hopko and argued democracies must turn intent into action: raise defence spending, widen joint exercises and intelligence-sharing, and boost cyber resilience. (1/2)

🇺🇦 What security guarantees does Ukraine need? Second panel at our international Ukraine conference with @JohnEdHerbst, @ChRodhe, @Bobrovska_MP, Flemming Splidsboel Hansen and @SaraNanni, moderated by LibMods Ukraine Program Director @Simon_Schlegel_. Sara Nanni: "Right now we have a negotiation table with three parties, two of them want a capitulation of Ukraine. So, maybe we need a new table!" Solomiia Bobrovska,: "On the negotiations – There is an endless list of demands from Trump’s administration of what Ukraine must do. But what are the demands to the Russian side? Will they just stop fighting along the frontline? Russian threat will be endless, and we must be prepared. Freedom is not free." #LibMod #UkraineandUs

Ok folks, deep breaths. There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome. (A rather long 🧵, obviously) /1

In my latest op-ed, I argue against two widespread beliefs on Russia that can have devestating effects on European security. Russia is not a local problem and inaction does not lead to peace. Europe must wake up and face Russia as a systemic threat. euractiv.com/section/global-…

Russia is waging an intense hybrid war against Moldova. The stakes are enormous for Moldova but also for the EU and Ukraine. The EU should double down on its support to Moldova. My report on Russia’s hybrid war against Moldova. sceeus.se/en/publications/ru…

Interesting discussions at #WSF2024, including on propaganda and misinformation. We just published a report on the Russian economy that address the propaganda narrative around how “well” it is doing (or not!) available here konj.se/download/18.443e2a2a…

Do not fall for this: Russia is calling for Ukraine's capitulation. In addition to land, Russia is also calling for all international sanctions to be lifted, and for Kyiv to renounce joining NATO and confirm Russia's oversight over Ukraine's domestic politics (language policy).
Just in: Russian president Vladimir Putin has said Russia will immediately cease fire and begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine if Kyiv withdraws troops from four contested regions on.ft.com/3Ru7WtX
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The regions referred to are not contested, they are within the internationally recognised border of Ukraine. Russia has illegally invaded them and the UN has demanded they leave. news.un.org/en/story/2023/….

Charlotta Rodhe @ChRodhe at our public discussion "Russia and the West - What is at Stake" in #Berlin: "When we look at the #Zeitenwende it's of course only half baked and it's quite urgent actually to make sure that thing can come out of the oven and we can all use that [...] I mean, the easy question is what do we expect from Germany, its strategic leadership." "But I think we also need to understand that whether or not #Germany wants to lead, people will follow just by the fact that Germany's what Germany is. And the risk aversion that we see in German policies [...] becomes an alibi for others as well [...] and it becomes a drag on the West's resolve in handling the situation." "And I mean anything less than a Ukrainian victory and a Russian military defeat in #Ukraine actually means that #Russia harvests fruits of aggression and it puts us in a very difficult situation. I mean, we talk about international law, global order, European security order and so on. But what this really is, is a betrayal of the whole European project, the whole idea of Nie wieder." Today, Sweden presents its three-year plan for military aid to Ukraine, totalling 75 billion SEK (~€6,5bln). Together with the previous Swedish support packages, this will bring Sweden’s total military aid to Ukraine to over 100 billion SEK (~€8,6bln). (1/4)
