Two days of dialogue, reflection and collective action in Wote, Makueni County have come to a close.
The 6th Annual Civic Space Protection Summit brought together civil society organisations, human rights defenders, journalists, state institutions, development partners, youth, community representatives and other stakeholders to reflect on the state of civic space in Kenya and the threats facing democratic participation ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Across the Summit, participants examined the issues shaping Kenya's civic and democratic environment -from strengthening collective protection mechanisms for human rights defenders and civic actors, to public order management, digital civic space, public participation and accountability, and electoral preparedness.
But in the midst of these critical conversations, the Summit also made space to care for the people carrying this work. Through the Safe Haven Tent, our wellness program showed civic actors what it looks like to practice healing through simple, collective wellness practices. It offered a space where people could pause, breathe and reflect- a quiet reminder that protecting civic space also means protecting the wellbeing of those who defend it.
The Summit culminated in the Makueni Declaration, calling on government and state agencies to uphold fundamental freedoms, strengthen independent oversight, build collective protection mechanisms for civic actors, safeguard digital civic freedoms, and ensure the meaningful participation of women, youth, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups.
The conversations have concluded, but the commitments made in Makueni mark an important point of action.

KHRC unequivocally condemns the unlawful and brutal abduction of Alex Kiprotich, associate editor at the @StandardKenya (Standard Media Group).
While the Group has announced that Kiprotich was found alive, dumped near Masinga Dam nine hours after his abduction along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway, KHRC maintains that officers responsible, including their commanders, must be arrested and prosecuted without delay.
The chilling video of Kiprotich’s abduction has placed William Ruto’s regime’s brutal and clandestine policing tactics in full public view. For years, victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings have described to the KHRC a killer squad operating with a similar brazenness and disregard for the law as those who abducted Kiprotich.
Witnesses recount that these squads are heavily armed, their faces obscured by balaclavas, often forgoing uniforms, and driving Subaru vehicles, sometimes bearing fake number plates. These actions, KHRC notes, directly violate a court order mandating that law enforcement officers be easily identifiable during operations.
The abduction comes amid media reports indicating that nearly three Kenyans were killed by police daily, totalling 3,985, during Ruto’s four years of repression. KHRC asserts that Ruto has failed to fulfil his promise to keep our country safe, and must take responsibility to end enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Kenyans deserve to know: Who won the tender, how was it awarded, and was the process above board? Public money is not a family business. #PoliceUniformTender #FollowTheMoney

Inuka Kenya Ni Sisi! joined residents of Kisumu County at Mama Grace Social Hall for the Katiba@16 celebrations, under the theme “Defending the Democratic Mandate Ahead of 2027.”
The engagement provided a powerful space for citizens to reflect on 16 years of the 2010 Constitution, the progress made, the gaps that remain, and what must be done to protect Kenya’s democratic gains ahead of the 2027 elections.
Participants opened the day by sharing expectations, early warnings, and messages of hope and healing for Kenya, highlighting the need for peaceful, inclusive and citizen-centred elections.
Discussions also examined police accountability, state violence and the protection of civic space, emphasizing on the growing crisis of lack of integrity within the police service and the need for upholding the constitutional obligation for professionalism and lawful enforcement.
The conversations further explored electoral integrity, IEBC preparedness, legal safeguards, online civic engagement, trauma-informed action, national cohesion and meaningful citizen participation.
As Kenya looks toward 2027, the message from Kisumu is clear: the Constitution must not remain a document on paper. Its promises must be lived, protected and fully implemented.
Young people and citizens across Kenya are calling for the full implementation of the Constitution of Kenya, stronger accountability, protection of civic space and a democratic process where every Kenyan’s voice and rights matter.

The most powerful feature of the 2010 constitution is that it places citizens at tye centre of governance, providing them with the power to demand participation, incluscion, accountability and transparent governance. Sixteen years ago, on 27 August 2010, we gave ourselves a new constitutional order. We promulgated the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 with a promise that sovereignty would no longer be treated as the property of those who occupy State House, Parliament or government offices.
Today, as we celebrate sixteen years of that Constitution, we must ask ourselves an uncomfortable question: Have we truly transferred power to the people, or have we simply changed the language while preserving the old habits of power?
The 2010 Constitution was not designed to make leaders powerful. It was designed to make Kenyans sovereign.
Article 1 is unequivocal: all sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya. Government is supposed to exercise that power on behalf of the people, not against them.
Yet we are witnessing a dangerous pattern where those in power increasingly resist scrutiny, accountability and legitimate public criticism. Instead of treating citizens as the owners of the State, some in power behave as though citizens are subjects who must seek permission to question authority.
When political authority begins to fear the people, it reaches for the instruments of coercion.
We have seen a disturbing deployment of the police in ways that make the Service appear less like a constitutional institution protecting citizens and more like a roaming militia for political convenience.
That is not the Kenya we voted for in 2010.
The police belong to the people. They are not the private security detail of a political class. Their constitutional duty is to protect life, uphold the law and respect human dignity. They must never become an instrument for intimidating citizens, suppressing dissent or manipulating the democratic process.
Sixteen years after promulgation, therefore, the question is not whether we have a beautiful Constitution.
We do.
The question is whether we have the political courage to implement it.
We must also confront the manner in which elections are conducted.
The Maina Kiai principle was supposed to settle a fundamental question: elections belong to voters. The will of the voter must be protected at every stage of the electoral process, and the final result must emerge from the people rather than from administrative manipulation.
But seasoned politicians have repeatedly shown reluctance to fully embrace a system where citizens, rather than political brokers, determine who governs them.
That is why Kenyans must take the lead.
We must become the first line of defence for our democracy. We must know our polling stations. We must understand the electoral process. We must protect our votes. We must demand transparent counting, accurate tallying and accountable institutions.
Your vote is not a favour you give to a politician. It is an expression of your sovereign power.
If we are serious about defending the 2010 Constitution, we must stop treating constitutional rights as decorations that we remember once every five years.
The Constitution must live in our police stations. It must live in our courts. It must live in Parliament.
It must live in our counties. It must live in our elections. Most importantly, it must live in the everyday relationship between the Kenyan citizen and the State.
At SAFINA Party, we believe that the answer to abuse of power is not another political arrangement among the same political class. The answer is to return power to where the Constitution says it belongs: to the people.
That is why we advocate for institutions that are directly and meaningfully accountable to citizens. That is why we support reforms that separate policing from political control and strengthen civilian oversight.
A democracy cannot survive when citizens fear the institutions that are supposed to protect them.
A constitutional republic cannot function when leaders are selected through political arrangements rather than genuinely elected by citizens.
