Illegal school levies are pushing learners out of classrooms and turning Kenya’s constitutional promise of free and compulsory basic education into a reality that increasingly depends on a family’s ability to pay. A new survey by the @_ebwg shows that more than nine in 10 households surveyed either paid an illegal levy in 2025, expect to pay one in 2026 or expect to pay more than the gazetted school fee.
At #PAC2026, KHRC's @nerima_annet discussed why Africa needs fairer taxing rights, greater transparency and stronger action on illicit financial flows. The UN Tax Convention is an opportunity to reshape global tax rules so that wealth generated in Africa contributes to Africa’s development.

.@WilliamsRuto regime is misguided in thinking that unleashing chaos and staging protests at @StandardKenya will deter critical, independent journalism.
KHRC stands with the newsroom’s bold, independent journalism, protected by Articles 33, 34 and 35 of Kenya’s Constitution.
We urge SMG to stand firm and double down on critical reporting. Kenya needs journalism that holds power to account.

KHRC’s @OduorErnest and @disruptberlin's @t_bazz write that telecom infrastructure has made us part of a surveillance system without our consent. Because this infrastructure is woven into nearly every part of daily life, the surveillance it enables can be difficult to see, yet the data it generates allows the state to trace movements, relationships and patterns of life.
The consequences are serious because such surveillance can undermine our fundamental freedoms and presumption of innocence, and, in Kenya, has been linked to cases involving enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Their commentary draws on new research by Namir Shabibi, Telecoms, Ubiquitous Surveillance and State Crime: A Case Study from Kenya. Read the research: disruption.institute/fellows…
