Sheesh Mehal : Where Mirrors Light and Space Interplay
Sheesh Mehal a masterpiece of architecture was built inside Lahore fort during Shah Jahan’s period in1631-1632 within the Shah Burj complex. Asif Khan supervised the construction of the palace.
Named as “Palace of Mirrors” but its splendor is extraordinary. It was not an ordinary public hall but a royal residence for the family and selected courtiers.
Was Sheesh Mehal built for Mumtaz?
One legend says that Mumtaz dreamed of herself floating so high in the sky and touching the stars. She longed to experience same in real life which was responded by the emperor Shah Jahan as he ordered the construction of the “Palace of Mirrors” where mirrors reflect brilliance of stars. Its ceiling is star shaped . A chamber deep inside the palace was built for Shah Jahan and Mumtaz but she passed away before even completion of the palace. The legend associated with Mumtaz and Sheesh Mehal shouldn’t be taken as an established fact. Originally palace was studded with diamonds, pearls and precious stones which were looted and colored glass ornaments were introduced.
Sheesh Mehal under Maharaha Ranjit Singh
When Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured the fort he also chose Sheesh Mehal as private residence and built a harem over the Sheesh Mehal that put excessive dead load on the false ceiling of the palace. The rooms were removed during conservation work in 1905-1906 under British rule.

A highly informative post by @AinnieAS on who initially built the Lahore fort & how it was reshaped by successive Mughal rulers into a towering monument evoking mixed feelings today. It is also part of history that Gen Zia turned it into torture cell for political prisoners.
Lahore Fort was rebuilt by Malik Ayaz Ghazni; adorned by Akbar and his successors
According to securely documented history Lahore fort was built long before Mughals. Records say 1st Ghaznavid governor of Lahore Malik Ayaz rebuilt the fort and its walls (Ian Talbot &Tahir Kamran,2017) which is backed by the archaeological excavation report of Department of Archaeology and Museums Government of Pakistan 1959.
Who built it originally???
In the said excavation a gold coin from Ghaznavid period and occupation levels much older than the Ghaznavid period( pre Muslim era); a roughly 12feet high mud brick wall was recorded. Archaeologists regard it as the fortress which was attacked by Mehmud of Ghazni during his invasion.
Akbar brought transformation to the fort and turned it into an extraordinary monument. He shaped the fort with the use of baked brick and red sand stone:that gave birth to richly embellished and adorned palaces and courts at the fort.
Jahangir added more decoration and a striking feature as Picture Wall. Picture Wall is a fine piece of Art with glazed tiles, mosaic work, geometric designs, courtly scenes, flora and fauna.
Shah Jahan brought white marble- built Sheesh Mehal, Naulakha Pavillion, Moti masjid, mirror work and petra-dura into the heart of the fort.
Aurangzeb gave gigantic and monumental the Alamgiri Gate facing Badshahi Mosque.
Later, it became royal residence of Ranjit Singh and then came under the use of British.
Our pioneer archaeologist Dr.Ahmad Hassan Dani (gold medalist Benares University) had similar thoughts and openly stated them. Dr Dani was brought to Pakistan from Dhaka State University by the then President of Pakistan Ayub Khan

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Many years ago I came across a Defence Day report in The Nation: "September 6 martyrs paid rich tribute in Chawinda". There was a picture too.
My young lieut self grew up in this very landscape my brain still retains on fingertips.
How come I missed this graveyard!
