I am excited to announce our investment in @lightsprintai When Opus 4.5 came out, it completely changed how our Prod/Eng team worked at 645. We had been talking about the emerging role of a "product architect," but that release made it all possible. However, as we all became product architects, we started working in silos... That's why I was immediately excited when I saw the demo for @lightsprintai. 1/ It has an incredible engineering team behind it; Ben Chan literally built the engineering team at BitGo 2/ The product brought collaboration back; we could see each other's work without annoying staging deploys or even local setups 3/ It improved our creativity; we could iterate on our codebase, and we immediately got rid of Lovable 4/ It empowered the entire team. One of our engineers said, "This is the best tool I have used since Claude." And even better, we have people who have never shipped before (who don't even know what shipping means) shipping We are still avid users and look forward to building more in public with this team.

Our co-founder Nnamdi Okike (@thedatavc) joined the How I Invest podcast to discuss the growth of 645 and its investment strategy in a changing venture capital market. Check it out at the link below.
$50 million seed rounds have become normal in AI. Nnamdi Okike says that is one of the worst things that can happen to an early-stage company. Nnamdi Okike (@thedatavc) is Co-founder and Managing Partner of @645ventures , which is raising its fifth fund after building its early sourcing model at Insight Partners. His firm has spent twelve years studying what actually predicts which seed-stage companies survive, and outsized early capital is not on the list of good signs. Here is how he explained it on my podcast: "When you raise a really big round out of the gate, especially when you don't have product market fit, when you're still trying to figure out what's going to work, the tendency is to spend much more money than you need to, do a lot of experiments you shouldn't be doing. Not to mention, you create a culture within a company that is the wrong culture. I actually think massive rounds are really bad for companies." Scarcity forces a founder to decide which experiment actually matters instead of running all of them at once. It also filters who joins the company in the first place: people who sign up because they believe in the problem, not because a fifty-million-dollar round means a comfortable salary. Okike has watched entire cohorts of YC founders raise the same size round at the same valuation regardless of whether they are building emerging-market fintech or a nuclear reactor, which tells him the number is being set by the market's mood, not by what the business actually needs. The founders he backs raise exactly enough to hit the next milestone and not a dollar more. That constraint is the discipline, not a limitation on it. Congrats to the @ForterraDrive team!
$238M Series C— Accelerating the future of defense. From autonomy and edge compute to resilient communications, our platforms are redefining how modern operations connect and coordinate. This funding accelerates our work to deliver interoperable autonomy at scale with proven, fielded, technology that is already reshaping how missions get done. The round was led by Moore Strategic Ventures, joined by new investors including Salesforce Ventures, Franklin Templeton, Balyasny Asset Management L.P., 645 Ventures, Hanwha Asset Management, 9Yards Capital and NightDragon, alongside participation from existing investors XYZ Venture Capital, Hedosophia, and Enlightenment Capital. Doubling down on their investment into Forterra, Crescent Cove Advisors LP provided both equity and debt, showing continued support since Forterra’s Series A in 2021. Autonomy isn’t the future. It’s the new baseline.

running a nyc gp search has been a reminder of how far the ecosystem has come. oai, cursor, thrive all in soho, flatiron still a gem for tech. city feels white hot right now. 6x growth in active vc firms since 2010 (2+ direct seed or series a investments) isn’t just noise, it’s a shift. sf still has the density (4x increase), but nyc feels different this time. s/o to the anchors: @RRE (1994) @insightpartners (1995) @Lux_Capital (2000) @usv (2003) @alley_corp (2007) @FirstMarkCap (2008). laid an excellent foundation. the breakouts: @ThriveCapital @BoxGroup @PrimaryVC @Work_Bench @645ventures one to watch: @stellation. what @pboyce has built so far is impressive and the window for ems who can get it right is very real. v2 is for other emerging funds + solos in nyc. i have a handful in mind but curious who else out east is raising or deploying fund 1 or 2 right now, esp in ai? (graph below: nyc vs bay area growth curve) 🧵 below.

Consumer investors are a dying breed. VC funding in consumer companies plunged from ~30% of global venture dollars in 2014 to just ~6% in 2024. Yet fundamental human needs haven’t changed. Massive opportunities exist, and AI has reignited excitement to build hyper-personalized, impactful experiences. I recently co-hosted a dinner gathering the most thoughtful consumer investors and founders to unpack what it takes to build enduring consumer businesses in the AI era. Lessons from the past: - Identify intense user love early. Genuine passion among even a small user base signals future scale. “You can grow the love, but you can’t fake the love.” - Minimize “time to magic.” Study how quickly target users reach their “wow” moment and whether it fundamentally transforms an existing experience or behavior pattern. The most successful consumer companies (Uber, Tinder, Instacart, etc) delivered this magic through dramatic friction reduction in existing behaviors. - Growth trajectory can beat market size. Airbnb had just 47k homestay guests in 2010 but dominated a rapidly expanding category. Insights for the Present: - Gen Z/alpha are redefining AI product behaviors. They're using ChatGPT to facilitate social interactions and games not just for productivity. - Embrace the "privilege expansion" thesis. AI is democratizing premium services (personal stylists, doctors, coaches) previously only available to the wealthy. - Watch behavior patterns outside your demographic. For example missing what’s happening on TikTok/Discord means missing what billions of people are doing. Bets on the future: - AI-native social networks built on personalization with a lot more context on you as a whole person - Creative tools that remove technical barriers - Healthcare transformation through consumer-first approaches The next wave of consumer companies won't just solve problems. They'll create entirely new behaviors we can't yet imagine. — Shout-outs for consumer companies to keep an eye on: Alta, Callie, Daz, Dovly AI, Ellis, @onton_ai , @gumloop, @higgsfield_ai, Inner Balance, Jars AI, Kino, Latitude, MiSalud Health, Plaicin, Storycraft, Super Teacher Inc., Volley, @WisprFlow, Zingroll Thanks Randi, @yasmeena__f, @AHolidayiii, @thedatavc at @645ventures and @shawnvc at @MenloVentures for co-hosting and Claire at @jpmorgan and Nehemiah at @AWSstartups for sponsoring! Stars at the table: @marrc, @ErikSchluntz, @thistrippjones, @cowboy_vc @labunleashed, @nbt, @wwshaef, @louisberyl, @denwezoh, @JoshConstine, @TheLisaWu, @JamesCurrier
