You can now run 70B LLMs on a 4GB GPU. AirLLM just made massive models usable on low-memory hardware. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 AirLLM released memory-optimized inference for large language models. It runs 70B models on 4GB VRAM. It can even run 405B Llama 3.1 on 8GB VRAM. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 AirLLM loads models one layer at a time. Instead of loading everything: → Load a layer → Run computation → Free memory → Load the next layer This keeps GPU memory usage extremely low. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 • No quantization required by default • Optional 4-bit or 8-bit weight compression • Same API as Hugging Face Transformers • Supports CPU and GPU inference • Works on Linux and macOS Apple Silicon 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 • Run Llama, Qwen, Mistral, Mixtral locally • Test large models without cloud GPUs • Prototype agents on cheap hardware

Okay I see people saying “this is software, don’t trust software”. For few years I have studied and worked in embedded systems and also dabbled with RTOS (Real Time Operating Systems). When you use the word “real time” in software, you indirectly mean “soft real time” 1/n

it's so dumb - we've known for 50+ years now that if you make fans with uneven blade spacing, you can make them quieter by distributing the sound energy across more of the frequency spectrum. but you go and buy any fan for your house and they don't even bother to be better

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) has achieved net energy gain from fusion! This is incredibly exciting scientifically, but what does it mean for the future of energy? In all likelihood, very little. A thread:
SCOOP: Net energy gain in a fusion reaction has been a holy grail in science for decades. Now I’m told US scientists have done it. A massive breakthrough with revolutionary potential for clean power. US Energy Secretary to hold a press conference Tuesday on.ft.com/3PgDdya

Читаю «Берлинский дневник» Уильяма Ширера. Он пишет о состоянии немецкого общества во второй половине 30-х годов. Как говорится, все совпадения случайны (но это не точно).
