One of my favorite parts of XC is yelling stuff at athletes...
You can see it in their eyes while racing if they hear you and respond to it.
Your voice as a coach or fan can help.
Take the time to figure out what works/resonates with athletes.

A college kid in a Spider-Man suit missed a field goal this morning and still walked off the field with $2 million.
His name is Carter. He's a biology student at BYU who wants to be a dentist, and he says he had no idea there was even a kicking contest when he showed up on campus this week.
The contest belongs to Pat McAfee, the former NFL punter turned ESPN host. Every Saturday on College GameDay, he picks one student out of the crowd and gives them a 33-yard kick for a pile of money. He started it back in 2023 to prove kicking is harder than it looks on TV, and for three seasons every dollar came out of his own pocket. ESPN puts that at more than $6 million to students and charities.
This year Home Depot started matching whatever Pat puts up, so the base prize went to $1 million a kick.
Then today happened. BYU hosts Notre Dame tonight, and Jazz owner Ryan Smith, a BYU guy, was standing right there on the set. Pat got him to throw in a million. Then he went after Smith's business partner Ryan Sweeney, who went to Notre Dame, and got him to pledge a million to charity on the same day his school plays BYU. Sweeney agreed, reluctantly.
So Carter hooks his first kick wide right. The crowd pretty much refuses to let it end there, Herbstreit lines him up again, and a knuckleball wobbles through the uprights. That's $2 million to him and $1 million to charity. The student section knocked down the barricades to get to him.
Here's what I keep thinking about. A 30-second Super Bowl ad cost about $8 million this year. Pat's contest has paid out roughly $8.5 million in seven Saturdays this season, and more and more of that money comes from Home Depot and whoever he can talk into it on air. For around the price of one Super Bowl commercial, he owns the loudest few minutes of college football every week.
It's paying off for him, too. Front Office Sports says the contest has taken over from Lee Corso's headgear pick as the show's signature moment. ESPN currently pays Pat $17 million a year to license his show, and he's reportedly in early talks on an extension that could top $60 million a year.
For three years Pat paid for this whole thing out of his own bank account. Today two guys in the crowd covered two-thirds of a $3 million prize just to be part of his bit.

If Mississippi States one spot drop feels off to you, itās because it is.
In the history of college football there have only been two cases where a team fell less than 10 spots in the AP Top 25 after a 30+ point loss this early in the season.
1994 Tennessee fell 8 spots
1984 UCLA fell 9 spots
So yes, Miss States falling only one spot is not only an anomaly, itās statistically unbelievable.
