How is robustness ensured when tissues push/pull one another during morphogenesis? Dedicated programs are needed and they diverged and emerged abruptly due likely to mechanics driven positive feedback.
How do embryos avoid inter-tissue mechanical conflicts? Check out our preprint on the cephalic furrow: doi.org/10.1101/2023.10.09.5… An awesome collaboration between @yuchiunwang Lab @BDR_RIKEN, and the Lemke lab @COSHeidelberg lead by @bipashadey29, @girish_kale_phd, and myself. A 🧵

Our paper is now online! How can we describe active agents—filaments and cells—on curved surfaces? How does curvature affect their collective behavior? We develop a simple geometric framework and show that flocking depends on curvature heterogeneity. doi.org/10.1103/mxgg-9w4l

I found that my master’s research on Coupled Map Gas(hdl.handle.net/2433/95929) is featured in a recent review (doi.org/10.1016/j.physrep.20…). I published it much later (doi.org/10.1016/S0167-2789(0…). My supervisor @KsqU_LL had always encouraged me to publish it. Here, a supplementary movie.

Pleased to share our study on brachiopods and dorsal–ventral patterning, now out in @NatureComms. doi.org/10.1038/s41467-026-7… We present the first chromosome-level genome of a brachiopod and show that the core patterning mechanism is deeply conserved across bilaterians. (1/5)

New preprint: How is multicellular handedness determined? The same cell chirality can produce opposite multicellular handedness. Just as a car move forward or backward from the same engine rotation. By @TomokiIshibashi, et al. doi.org/10.64898/2026.04.04.…

I’m so happy to have been part of such a fruitful and, above all, FUN collaboration! Physics and biology come together to help us understand the fundamental mechanisms of embryonic development. There’ll be more news soon, so stay tuned 👀
Our paper is out in Nature Physics🎉 We uncovered how mouse epiblast cells acquire orientational order guided by tissue boundaries, combining 3D quantitative imaging with theory. A wonderful collaboration with @ErzbergerGroup and @pguruciaga at @embl! nature.com/articles/s41567-0…

Through live imaging enabled by new tools, Wuergezhen et al. visualises the hidden dynamics of the basement membrane (BM). We show how BM turnover & expansion coordinate with cellular movements & divisions, highlighting their active & synergistic roles in skin morphogenesis.
Wuergezhen, @hirofujiwara et al. @BDR_RIKEN reveal basement membrane (BM) dynamics in hair follicle development. By developing mice expressing fluorescently tagged Col4a2, they show how BM turnover rates guide progenitor behavior and organ shape. hubs.la/Q02_6dXr0

I hope folks @IISERPune and @richa_rikhy lab like where we are taking the story to on the foundation of the insightful and elegant discovery done there. Can’t wait to hear what feedback they have.
Life comes to a full circle. Grateful to be back at @IISERPune to present my work about yolk, part of which started during my PhD with @richa_rikhy.Thank you for hosting us! Hoping for many students to visit Japan and work at @BDR_RIKEN and with the amazing @yuchiunwang!
