my more nuanced take: to be able to hone your debugging skills in general and to learn the programming concepts in a more complete sense are create in the fires of your early terrible programming if you skip that stage, your debugging skills will suffer and you will find that you are not nearly as good as perceive because you have never really done it by yourself some of the most beneficial debugging sessions, which built confidence in my own abilities, were from implementing some of these esoteric data structures. they helped me understand what i was doing i simply think that to learn with this level of assistance will do more harm to your overall growth, especially in debugging, than the apparent net benefit from "moving faster." or "focusing on the code not the boilerplate"
students having access to copilot for free is the biggest educational blunder of all time

If we don't keep raising awareness of low-level programming skills, the skillset will disppear forever under a sea of SDKs, binary blobs and proprietary chips. C programming matters, assembly language matters.
Yes, we post a lot about programming languages and it gets people very excited and opinionated. But we do this to raise awareness that there is still a place for low-level code outside of Operating System development. FFmpeg still needs low-level optimisations to be fast

The Norwegian government is killing their startup scene. The tax system was already bad enough for entrepreneurs, but now they’re taking it even further. If you leave the country having raised money for your startup, you’ll now have to pay an exit tax of >30% of your startup’s valuation - even if you never got a dollar out of the startup personally! Imagine a co-founder owning 30% of their $10m seed startup. They’d have to pay $1m+ in taxes if they leave the country. And it’ll only get worse as you raise later rounds. As a consequence, you’ll be kept hostage as a founder in Norway. It’s effectively becoming the Cuba of the Nordics. It’s especially sad given that Norway’s economy is extremely reliant on fossil fuels - and entrepreneurs are the only way to diversify the economy. The message here is clear: If you’re about to found a startup in Norway, make sure you move first.

ChatGPT casually dropped an APP STORE 🤯 It can now: - browse the web (RIP Bing waitlist, cutoff) - write and run Python (RIP replit?) - access org info (RIP docsearch startups) - add third party plugins from OpenTable, Wolfram, Instacart, Zapier, etc) - developer SDK in preview

I think we can call it shut on 'Open' AI: the 98 page paper introducing GPT-4 proudly declares that they're disclosing *nothing* about the contents of their training set.

Microsoft's new Kosmos-1 is incredible. It's a new Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM). Their model can understand images, text, images with text, OCR, image captioning, visual QA. It can even solve IQ tests. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2302.14045 Code: github.com/microsoft/unilm

My new favorite thing - Bing's new ChatGPT bot argues with a user, gaslights them about the current year being 2022, says their phone might have a virus, and says "You have not been a good user" Why? Because the person asked where Avatar 2 is showing nearby

Not long ago, I found the project kli, but it didn't meet some of my needs, so I modified an extended version based on that. Many thanks to the kli author @xsetbv. Now you can modify the encryption algorithm in any way you like.🥸 github.com/gmh5225/kli-ex

I replaced a complex data structure with a flat vector, and changed the algorithm to work with it. Result is twice as fast and uses about 1/3 of the memory. Never underestimate the effectiveness of simplicity.
