In my article in today’s Standard (6th July), page 14, I reflect on the role that art has played in unsettling the powerful and comforting the people. Thankyou @StandardKenya. @GitobuImanyara @MarthaKarua @Wakabando @AliceMagaka @THGCenterKe @JubileePartyK

By the time I learned Mudavadi and Weta were less inspiring than a boiled egg and a packet of Mala I had not even met Raila. For them to claim it is Baba who has taught us to disrespect them is utter rubbish. Respect is earned. They haven't earned mine.

What happens when people participate, but cannot see their participation shaping what comes next? Our Partner @oidp_org has published a new reflection on the GDC Global Forum 2026, taking us back inside the Trust and Participation conversations in Athens. Representing @uclg_org, Adrià Duarte and Julia Guimarães joined the working group, alongside OIDP Advisory Committee member Silvia Cervellini, exploring one of the Forum’s central tensions: civic energy remains strong, but participation does not automatically translate into influence, institutional change or greater democratic trust. From the #RenunciaYa movement in Guatemala to the role of local and territorial democracy, the article reflects on what it takes to bridge that gap: stronger civic ecosystems, transparency, continuity, inclusive participation and institutions capable of turning public demands into meaningful response. The bigger challenge emerging from Athens is therefore not simply how we create more participation, but how we make participation matter. Thank you to our partners at OIDP for bringing their expertise to the GDC Global Forum and for carrying this important conversation forward. Read their full reflection at the link in the comments. #GDCGlobalForum #GlobalDemocracyCoalition #ParticipatoryDemocracy #DemocraticTrust #CivicParticipation #KeepDemocracyAlive

Any writer worth that label in salt must write. Begin with a sentence and then end up with a shelf stacked with your published writings. I am writing myself into libraries - whether you say what or what about me and my writings. By the time I die, you will say, “Stella Nyanzi was a writer!” Now for you, where are your writings apart from the comments on people’s social media?

🔍 Did you know? Most civil society organisations barely use AI — even though they're the ones most targeted by it. 1 in 5 CSOs surveyed don't use AI at all, largely due to lack of funding, technical capacity, and trust. Meanwhile, most AI tools aren't built for the communities civil society serves. "Many AI models are trained using data that does not reflect the realities or voices of African or queer communities. " — Research survey respondent, South Sudan New research from CIVICUS DDI explores the barriers CSOs face in adopting AI — and why closing this gap matters for human rights and civic space. 📄 Read the report: web.civicus.org/AI-and-Civil… #AI #CivilSociety #DigitalDivide #GlobalSouth #DigitalRights #CivicSpace
