What did you used to believe about HIV that you now know is not true?
At #AIDS2026, Alexandre Putti and João Netto reflect on how their perspectives have changed. HIV care is shaped by science, community and its intersections with other marginalised communities.

#DidYouKnow HIV treatment can help people living with HIV achieve an undetectable viral load - meaning they do not transmit HIV to their sexual partners. People with a suppressed viral load have a near-zero risk of transmitting HIV.
In 2025, 30.4 million people living with HIV globally have a suppressed viral load. The target? 38 million by 2030.
Countries must ensure everyone who needs HIV treatment can access it, helping people stay healthy and preventing new HIV infections. digitallibrary.un.org/record…
🚨 Over 200 new HIV infections reported weekly in Kampala is a call to action.
@uhruganda believes HIV prevention must be people centred, inclusive and stigma free. We must expand access to HIV prevention and treatment services, strengthen community led responses.

Communities are at heart of the HIV response, and the new Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS reflects that.
With a greater and explicit emphasis on key populations, and recommitment to the targets to increase community-led services, the new Political Declaration acknowledges their critical role.

Ending AIDS requires more than medical progress. It requires creating an environment where the communities most affected by HIV can lead, access services without fear, and have the resources to shape the response.
As our Director General, @richardlusimbo, reminds us, communities cannot lead from the shadows. Protecting their rights, investing in community-led responses, and trusting their leadership must remain central to the HIV response.

Funding cuts have a human cost. When harm reduction services are disrupted, people who use and inject drugs are left facing withdrawal, overdose risks and loss of essential care.

Funding cuts do more than reduce budgets. They weaken the systems communities rely on to stay healthy, safe and protected.
For key populations, every funding gap can mean fewer prevention services, disrupted care, reduced community outreach and greater vulnerability. Protecting these investments is not only about sustaining programmes. It is about protecting people and safeguarding hard-won progress in the HIV response.

Nearly 9 million people living with HIV are still not receiving lifesaving treatment. We must close this gap by removing barriers and ensuring everyone can access quality, stigma-free HIV services. #UnitedToEndAIDS #HIV #EndAIDS
