Misguided public health advice has scarring effects
In the ’80s and ’90s, they said fat was bad.
In the 2000s, they said carbs were bad.
In the 2010s, they said sugar was bad.
Now in the 2020s, they’re saying seed oils are bad.
Every decade there's a new health villain when, in reality, people stay healthy get there by eating mainly whole foods, walking, and lifting weights.

This may sound compelling if you don't understand what causes chronic disease.
But to dismiss everything because a prior prescription was wrong is to avoid understanding the actual cause.

It's getting to the point with saturation of sports gambling that any weird play like this needs to be fully investigated for corruption.
(I'm not making any accusations in this case, just saying that with gambling ubiquity comes a greater temptation to throw games.)
I also have never felt good on either a carnivore or super-high-fat diet. I prefer to eat a fair amount of carbs but also a fair amount of fat. (H/T @exfatloss swamp visualizer)
This is the third or fourth time I've tested a high fat, meat based diet and the last. My body just does not like it! 😳
The higher the fat, the higher my glucose and insulin, more inflammation, more and more pain in my body.
No energy.
Heavy tired legs.
Never again will I eat a high fat carnivore diet. 😅
Animal based. - fruit, animal products, raw milk, low fat is where I feel my best and where my metabolic markers are best.
So now for a gradual introduction of fruit and a lowering of the fat. 🍉🍇🍑🥩🥚
Sorry if my experience doesn't align with yours. We don't have the same body - obviously....
Four and a half years of experience and experiments have shown this to be true again and again.
I thought I'd give it one more try now that my bowel can handle the high fat, but the other results were still the same. 🙄
Gradually increasing my pain, inflammation, misery... 🥹

People often have a sense that all the low-hanging scientific fruit has been picked, or that all the fruit that’s left can only be picked by huge teams with lots of funding.
But in fact, lots of projects are just the right scale for Indie Science.

We should all be caloriemaxxing
Just pretty cool as a ~124 lb female I can maintain my weight eating 2720 calories per day. 3 strength lifts per week, 1 cardio session and 10-12k steps per day. Nothing crazy exercise wise. Just consistent.
My definition of good metabolic health is to be able to eat more food without gaining weight since your body is converting more of that into ATP. Eating less and less calories while maintaining weight is metabolic downregulation.
Wish I could tell this to my younger self!!
Is the real AI misalignment risk at the individual level? When AI is your master (i.e. when you allow it to “learn”/think/make decisions for you), bad things happen.
New 5,000-word Substack post from me:
Trying to figure out what the "velocity" of body fat is (sort of like the "velocity" of money in an economy) and reviewing dozens of old studies on the topic to see what we can/can't conclude
tyleransom.substack.com/p/wh…
Bottom-line: speed of body fat turnover appears to depend on lots of different things, including demographics, health status, body part, and more.
Most existing studies don't cover all of these possibilities, so are probably uninformative to the questions we are interested in

Dario: "Given the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it’s my worry that in 6–12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet"
This isn't an inevitability. Maybe don't leave "swarms" unattended for days at a time?

It was a pleasure to visit last week! Thanks again for having me.
Excited to team up w/ @SdsuEcon for a fabulous Fall’26 Seminar Series ft. @tyleransom, B. Feigenberg, @TrebAllen, @EliraKuka, A. Smith, @AnwitaMahajan, @monicajdeza, @NicolasZiebarth, @coady_wing,
@MariaAPolyakova, A.M. Mayda, @DrNathanNunn & A. Soliman!
LLMs are not going to bring superintelligence/AGI. Maybe some other configuration of AI will? In concert with LLMs? So far, seems like more of a "bespoke applications" path to "success."
I highly recommend Cal Newport's latest video on this topic.

New visualizer with data from @tyleransom: Obesity by U.S. state
In shocking news, people in all states became much more obese😓

Really nice post here explaining how food formulation has changed over the years. One thing missing is a discussion of the solution: go back to saturated fat!
