Jeez. A woman I know and care about is fighting for her life, has lost a leg, and people are already fighting over whether the man accused of attacking her is a left-wing extremist, a right-wing extremist, a Nazi, a One Nation supporter, a cooker or a tree-hugger, a Zionist or a ā€˜Hamas supporter’. And on and on it goes. Who does he ā€˜belong’ to? So we can justify, excuse or condemn, according to who we ā€˜belong’ to. Apparently the important thing is to establish whose problem Brendan Nugent is. I know Helen Haines well. She was a nurse, then a midwife. She’s one of those rare politicians who actually turns up, listens and gives a shit. She’s met with us many times about the NDIS. The ABC reports she’s critically injured and has lost a leg. I wish I wasn’t writing that. My heart hurts, thinking about it. After listening to us fight to keep our supports, she will need them herself. If she survives this awful, awful, senseless attack. And senseless is the word. Police have Brendan Nugent in custody. They are investigating his motive. I know nothing about his health history. I don’t know if he’s ever applied for the NDIS, been refused entry or had support taken away. Neither do the people guessing on social media. A social media commentator says they attended a school reunion with him recently. They say he hit a man in the head with a brick, in Woolies. That sounds senseless, too. But I do know this. Between July and December 2025, the NDIA decided 4,272 access applications from people with psychosocial disability. Almost 2,950 were refused. Only 31% got in. Then, between April and June 2026, the NDIA revoked access for 5,855 existing participants across all disability groups. I’ve not found a psychosocial breakdown. My own kid has autism, ADHD and schizophrenia. He’s a beautiful, talented young man, and I am proud of him every day for getting up and continuing to fight. He’s frightened, not violent. He’s creative, clever and feels too much about everything, including for other humans. And he hasn’t even applied for the NDIS because these days, there’s no point. I want to know what this guy’s history is. Not just of any mental health struggles, but what support he had and tried to access. My own kid lived in Melbourne for two years, and that’s the heart of the city. I know what’s available and what’s not. So yes, I want to know what happens to people who are turned away. Where they go. Who checks on them. How much support their families have. And why we have become so accustomed to treating people who need help as a budgetary problem or, conversely, an investment opportunity. None of this explains what happened to Helen. Mental illness does not generally equal violence, and we don’t know if it played any role here. It is only the ā€˜bricked in Woolies’ (they don’t sell bricks at Woolies) and the apparent absence of motivation that makes me raise it. He knew Helen and she apparently had met him. She followed him on social media. She had taken the time to go out and meet with the Strathbogie group. She supported their cause. But something is wrong when we stop asking what happens to people we turn away and try to fit them into a ā€˜side’ so that we can more readily attack them. We are obsessed with dividing Australians into saints and bastards, left and right, OUR people and THEIR people. I have friends who vote LNP, friends in the Greens and Labor, a mate who works at Sky News. Because disability crosses all those boundaries. You’re a car accident, pregnancy or violent attack away from needing care yourself. Disability couldn’t give a shit which way they vote. Brendan Nugent belongs to this country too, whether any political faction wants him or not. That doesn’t excuse a single thing he’s accused of. Being Australian means belonging to all of us, including the people we find hardest to understand, or like.

Being fed decades of superhero films and low-bar comedy would do that to a contemporary audience.
Digger – Alejandro G IƱƔrritu’s latest film – looks like it might lose Warner Bros $245m. That would make it one of the worst performing productions in industry history. The loss may sting now. But it is all in service of Digger’s central argument: the masses have no taste. Yes, including you. @finn_mcredmond watches the flop of the year: newstatesman.com/culture/fil…

I know well that my death doesn't matter, just as my life hasn't mattered. But if I die in the coming days, don't remember me, for that also doesn't matter.

"motive not known". So, he's white.
Australian MP Dr. Helen Haines is in critical condition after being struck by a car outside her office building in Victoria. Police have arrested a 43-year old man accused of carrying out the attack and discovered a knife in his vehicle.

Former SBS journalist @MaryKostakidis has warned in a timely speech that growing popular discontent "can’t be controlled with repressive institutional behaviour and authoritarian legislative measures". "Just as you can’t stop an oppressed group of people from rising up against its oppressors, the rest of us can’t allow our conscience to be criminalised, and so we will not be intimidated into silence." deepcutnews.com/p/how-gaza-e…

There was a time when I cared about what [protester] people do while raising šŸ‡µšŸ‡ø flag & what they stand for etc etc Not anymore 3 yrs in accelerated genocide in Gaza. There’s so much outrage & it’s already too late for anything. I no longer care or bother.

A majority of the 635 children held in Israeli prisons in 2025 were put in solitary confinement, usually for between one and two weeks – some up to eight times. 92 per cent of those children had not been sentenced. A third had not even been charged with an offence. The world's highest court says Israel is an apartheid state. Its decades-long occupation is illegal.

Wow.
Melbourne-based videogame developer firm House House announced this week: ā€œWe have made the decision not to release Big Walk on Xbox, in accordance with the Palestinian-led BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement’s call to boycott Microsoft, and their designation of Microsoft Games (and Xbox) as a priority boycott target,ā€ It calls on fans and readers to read about why Microsoft is being targeted, and how such a targeted boycott has already been proven to be effective. It directs people to the BDS website, which details how Microsoft's technology is being used in Israel’s war on Gaza to carry out potential war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. šŸ”—More on The New Arab website

I’ve been thinking about the failure of protests these last 3 years. It really does feel like we are in a democratic algorithm when it comes to responding to our current condition: protest, petition, vote - experience the vibe like you did something - rinse and repeat.
If French protests are so effective why are they still stuck with neoliberalism? Why is their country still loyal to Israel and NATO? Why is the French ruling class completely unresponsive to French protester demands? You guys realize that this is like the 100th time in the last 10 years that France has erupted in protests over neoliberalism right? Americans tend to romanticize these protests but what have they accomplished? French protesters engage in revolutionary adventurism but don’t have a follow up on how to change the system in a meaningful way. So we repeat the same cycle over and over This is not a diss on the French protesters at all because they are just reacting to their material conditions, which is normal. But at what point do we begin having the conversation that western liberal democracy as a whole completely failed and no amount of ā€œprotestsā€ will fix it. Protests without further revolutionary action of building real dual power seems to amount to nothing in the west

Western activists deploy the whole "I've been to the West Bank," the same way that right-wing Christians say, "I've been baptized." Both are really just rhetorical devices people use to grant themselves a kind of mystical, enlightened status without having to prove a damn thing.

As a Muslim I thought his answer was lame. He conceded labelling the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist org without question to rescue himself as the Muslim who is loyal and law abiding. Just more good Muslim, bad Muslim.
As a Muslim I have been workshopping and refining the perfect answer to this accusation for 25 years, and he just...tweeted it out. He is so damn good at this.

Greta Thunberg raises awareness of the Kalimantan fires and haze crisis: ā€œThe fires and haze crisis is far from over. As terrifying as this footage is, the reality on the ground is much worse than what you see on social media. 2 million acres of forests have been destroyed by fires. Animals have been burned alive, people are dying and suffocating, villagers have lost their forests and rubber trees, firefighters have died, and 277,075 people have been hospitalized due to acute respiratory infections, including 62,400 children under the age of five. This situation has been ongoing for four months. Please continue to support by donating today to Borneo’s Fires and Haze Crisis Fundraising Campaign to help firefighters, build more haze shelters to protect people, especially children and vulnerable groups, and save the remaining forests.ā€
