Our 2nd monthly issue, "Biology's New Era," is live now on bigthink.com. In this issue, we explore the bleeding edge of biotech, as well as the scientists, writers, and philosophers whose efforts helped get us here. Some of what's inside: ⬤ Scientist-turned-writer Alex Hutchinson @sweatscience uses the legend of Secretariat to probe the limits of human athletic performance. ⬤ Futurist Peter Leyden examines how synthetic biology could help save Earth. ⬤ Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel @startswithabang challenges the leading theory of how life began. All that and much, much more. We hope you enjoy.

“But it’s enough, for now, to know that when the moment of truth comes, science has confirmed what athletes have always intuited. There’s more in there, if you’re willing to believe it.” First book of the year down. Highly recommend the work from @sweatscience!

The debate over what makes an athlete successful commonly centers around talent versus hard work. But two researchers have started to consider a potentially even-greater variable, writes @sweatscience: sheer luck. theatlantic.com/health/2026/…

Great article, Alex. The effects of exercise on cancer (especially colon cancer) are remarkable. You might find this conversation I had with Kerry Courneya (the lead author on the study you cite) interesting. foundmyfitness.com/episodes/…

How often do you choose to do something really hard, especially when you don’t want to? 🤔 Every time we do, we’re training our anterior cingulate cortex! 🧠 This part of our brain helps us handle challenge and uncertainty (it can even be doing DIY, laundry, something you don't enjoy! 🧺🛠️) Just wrapped up non-fiction @rebelbookclub September digital session, diving into Alex Hutchinson’s Endure @sweatscience. 📖 Endurance isn’t just about muscles, it’s about mindset💪 Science shows our limits are as much psychological as physical🤯 Guest speaker Tom Caulfield from @thetempesttwo shared how he rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in 54 days… with zero prior rowing experience🌊🚣‍♂️ Biggest takeaway: our limits aren’t fixed - we can stretch them further than we think ✨ #RebelBookClub #Endure #HumanPerformance #GrowthMindset #Mindset #BookClub

Excited to see ADAPTABLE included in the @sweatscience summer reading list! You can learn (among other cool details of your body) how (if you’ve got the alleles for tanning) your skin is producing melanin as you read on the beach!

Okay, Nike has just revealed details of how Faith Kipyegon will attempt to run a sub-four mile on June 26. Shoe: Victory Elite FK looks a lot like Victory 2 (carbon plate, air pod, foam heel). It's lighter (prototypes as low as 83g!), air pod is 3mm thicker, but still "legal."
