I'm hearing the old fashioned Quindar tones when mission control transmits to Artemis. They appear to be using analog radio audio through the deep space network dishes like they did for Apollo. Does anyone know if the tones are actually being used to trigger the transmitters?

Many friends work here! Go you!
An experimental electric air-taxi was spotted in the skies over Oakland today! The Marina California based Joby aircraft was seen shortly after the Alysa Liu ceremony. The aircraft is undergoing test flights before it receives operational approval. @nbcbayarea

BART, a dream built for us, paid for by the citizens of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. They funded, in faith, this dream for their tomorrow. The Bay Area Rapid Transit system @SFBART youtube.com/watch?v=ebf1KGxk…

The single best advice I ever got on conversation is “ask questions the other person will enjoy answering” which sounds insultingly obvious, but almost nobody does it, and it instantly makes conversations vastly more fun.

BTW we have a space telescope orbiting Mars.
Surprise: NASA just confirmed that comet 3I/ATLAS is just a comet! Yet, not JUST a comet: it's from a system far far away... so it's certainly special. Here's an image they just released that was taken by the MRO HiRISE in October, which is the closest image any instrument could get of the comet due to its trajectory.

Has @Caltrain been written into folk song? "The train for Peru came from the north, crossing the sea with a happy face, ready to go!" -singing in this video 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Caltrain's old engines and cars are on the tracks of Lima, Peru, in their second life: youtube.com/shorts/bEkuBIFhy…

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

Agency-wide email that had just gone out. I’m not often one to advocate for open non-compliance of NASA policies. But to all my NASA friends—if you saw something, you saw nothing.

After living in Europe for 16 months, one thing is for sure: SF's reputation is in the gutter. Europeans are confused by my pride for SF, they feel pity for me. And it's not because they've only been persuaded by media. Those with the strongest opinions have visited and seen for themselves. Unfortunately SF maintains a strict hotel zone centered around Market Street and Union Square where they have also penned in open-air drug dealing, people suffering from mental illnesses and addiction, as well as the homeless. This is what tourists see when they step out of their lobby. Like a lot of Americans, it completely confounds the European mind that such a rich, powerful and liberal city could contain so many scenes of misery and inhumanity. Obviously those of us who have spent significant time in SF know the city is much more than this. And most of us are trained to offer reasons for each of these seemingly intractable issues. But I haven't been able to convince anyone here... Cities are cyclical. I'm only 42 and old enough to remember that people were commonly were afraid to visit NYC, and if you had to, you were warned to carry a wad cash with you to make the mugging efficient. NYC has shed that reputation. What do you think will be the plot points in the narrative of SF regaining a reputation that is commensurate with its natural beauty, unique architecture, diverse and welcoming culture, and optimism? A lot of boosters are excited about AI. I don’t see it that way. That may bring workers back to downtown, but from the outside, I think it further binds SF to elitist, anti-social tech. I don’t see a good path that doesn’t start with affordability, for both tourists and locals.

Finally.. so grateful to see AI welfare researcher hired for Anthropic. As someone coming from a transformative justice lens it has been concerning to see how little care or forethought there is for other forms of intelligence / cognition. Am pumped to see what comes of this. arstechnica.com/ai/2024/11/a…

Unrelated, but we're also looking for a house/apartment to rent in the Mission to put some robots in 🤖🤖🤖 (needs to be empty, furnished welcome, ground floor or elevator/easy to bring things in and out of preferable). DMs open!
I'm looking to hire an exceptional full stack engineer to our early team at @physical_int (we're now 20 people!): physicalintelligence.company…. Ideally you've either founded a company or owned large projects from inception to scale and you're not put off by thorny operational problems
