If you understand the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction, you will understand more about tax than most. 😀

Generation X getting skipped across media is one thing.
The bigger problem is when policy fails to acknowledge our existence. Our tax dollars fail to support our concerns and needs — like health care, retirement, education, child care.
We’ve vanished from the public eye.

Reminder that if someone calls RRSPs a scam, it means they don't know how RRSPs work.

This is why finfluencers are so dangerous. This post, which got a ton of impressions, is badly misleading:
-35% tax rate includes both federal and provincial tax
-the 14% tax credit is federal only. Every province also provides a tax credit for CPP premiums. Reality is you have a 19%-25% credit.
-A $100,000 earner will, in fact, deduct about a quarter of the CPP premium at their Marginal Tax Rate, which I guess is 35%.
Rage farming bullshit.

Your clients are moving fast. Don’t get left behind. Read my article in Globe Advisor!
We’re living in a very different world than the one many of our financial systems were created to support. Clients have moved on from transactional relationships and are now demanding an advisor who is relational. But what exactly is a relational advisor? @JuliaChungFP, co-founder and chief executive officer of Vancouver-based Spring Planning (@SpringPlans), explains. theglobeandmail.com/investin…

Just spoke with @JasonQuinney in our Brampton office.
Needless to say, he's the busiest trustee in our firm, so he can only tweet once every five months, but I can confirm that all of the stories you have heard about Brampton, real estate, and "suspicious" mortgages are real.

This is the Trump effect in Canada. All the French's Ketchup bought up, Heinz remains on the shelf. Heinz Ketchup has "Made in the USA" on its label.
[To be fair to Heinz, both companies use tomatoes grown in Canada. But also to be fair, Heinz closed a factory in Canada in 2014 and people never forgot. Heinz has been fighting that bad PR ever since.]

🔍 Insolvency in Canada: A Glimpse Into Our Financial Future 🇨🇦💸
JUST RELEASED: The latest Joe Debtor Study by Hoyes, Michalos & Associates Inc. reveals a worrying trend:
· Unsecured debt has surged by 12.2% to an average of $60,678.
· Credit card debt is up 25.9%, now at $20,398 on average.
· 92% of insolvent clients have credit card balances, with millennials seeing a 35% rise!
Why? The squeeze between rising living costs and stagnant income growth is pushing Canadians to rely on high-interest credit for basics like food and rent.
Ontario's insolvency rates jumped 17.8% in 2024 - a sign of what might come next for the rest of Canada.
This trend isn't just numbers; it's real people facing tough choices. As we move through 2025, how can we better prepare or mitigate this growing crisis?

Missed a deadline for one of your RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP, or RDSP accounts?
It’s not the end of the world because these accounts all have carry-forward provisions you should know about.
Here is a quick 🧵 explaining how the room and carry-forwards work 👇

TFSA room warning:
If logging into the CRA portal to check your TFSA room early in the year, you CANNOT trust the number given. They even warn you not to.
The issue is that it will show you last year’s room plus the new year’s limit, but they have not subtracted any contributions you made last year yet. They are still waiting on financial institutions to report this number so they can subtract it. This will happen in a few months.
In the meantime you need to subtract any amount you contributed from this total.
The same applies to withdrawals the previous years which you get back as room this year.
