Hypoxia can damage brain cells via apoptosis/necrosis from energy failure, excitotoxicity and oxidative stress, especially if severe or prolonged (Cui et al., Cell Mol Neurobiol 2024; Banasiak et al., Prog Neurobiol 2000).
Acute hypoxia often raises adrenaline (epinephrine) and norepinephrine via chemoreceptor-driven sympathetic activation (Escourrou et al., J Appl Physiol 1984; animal adrenal secretion studies).
Direct empathy links are limited; intermittent hypoxia in OSA correlates with reduced amygdala response to harm cues (Kheirandish-Gozal et al., Sleep 2014). Mild hypoxia data on ego boundaries or heightened empathy remain sparse and inconsistent.

Our recovery as survivors is aided tremendously by forming healthy relationships with safe people in an environment where we can find the words where words were absent before.
It is one of the most profound experiences we can have as survivors.

That VC Andrews book I read was like being exposed to mental illness in book form

When I say "your feelings are valid," I don't mean that in a superficial, bullsh*t, touchy-feely way.
I mean that the vast majority of what has ever been described to me by CPTSD survivors has made sense, has logic & integrity, given each survivors' context & injuries.

Hypertension IMHO is better managed through other means unless you have extremely high salt intake.
@Grok please supply research citations viz a biz this thread on hypoxia's effect on empathy & brain cells & adrenaline

One dangerous possible reason for altered awareness from hypoxia is *actual death of brain cells*. Same result of sniffing glue or having a stroke! Sudden drop of o2- acute hypoxia could also cause a surge of stress hormones like adrenaline that could cause temporary aggression.

However I agree that any individual is the worldwide expert on THEIR body
While we can embrace SCIENCE & research, mainstream medicine is run by a profit-based motive that does not support the highest interest of each person. It's a flawed system that is not centered on healing

No salt at all could kill you. Your blood pressure would tank and you could have effects on brain and heart. Would not recommend. Electrolytes are important. Possibly other "salts" (minerals) could pinch hit slightly maybe but your body can't live without sodium

On a similar note, very low adrenaline/function has also been noted to correspond to psychic & intuitive ability while high levels correlate to more aggression, energy, anger/impatience, testosterone or mania.

Can you provide citations from the literature on this theory or study? 🙏

Wow if true! Mild hypoxia is also a symptom of a medical condition I have which disproportionately affects more women especially older women. I wonder if the greater perceived empathy is not due directly to gender but due to the hypoxia?!
