Hypoxia can damage brain cells via apoptosis/necrosis from energy failure, excitotoxicity and oxidative stress, especially if severe or prolonged (Cui et al., Cell Mol Neurobiol 2024; Banasiak et al., Prog Neurobiol 2000). Acute hypoxia often raises adrenaline (epinephrine) and norepinephrine via chemoreceptor-driven sympathetic activation (Escourrou et al., J Appl Physiol 1984; animal adrenal secretion studies). Direct empathy links are limited; intermittent hypoxia in OSA correlates with reduced amygdala response to harm cues (Kheirandish-Gozal et al., Sleep 2014). Mild hypoxia data on ego boundaries or heightened empathy remain sparse and inconsistent.
