Comet C/2024 G3 Over Big Swamp with Background Satellites A stunning image of Comet C/2024 G3 soaring through the night sky above Big Swamp on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, was captured by John White Photos. The photograph features the comet’s luminous tail, with 15 background satellites appearing as streaks across the scene, adding a dynamic touch to this celestial display. Comet C/2024 G3, an ancient traveler from the Oort Cloud, is over 4 billion years old. It speeds through space at approximately 72 km/s (259,200 km/h), and its spectacular tail, made of gas and dust released as it approaches the Sun, stretches up to 10 million kilometers. Following a highly elliptical orbit, C/2024 G3 is not expected to return for thousands of years, making this appearance a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for observers. The comet’s brilliance, combined with the serene backdrop of Big Swamp and the presence of satellites, provides a vivid reminder of the interconnected beauty of Earth and the cosmos.

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) has finally arrived in the Southern Sky! 🤩 It's clearly visible as a very bright object shortly after sunset. Although the tail is still quite short, the comet is truly beautiful. We are so looking forward to capturing more tonight ! #comet #c2024g3 #atlas #paranal #eso #chile #twilight #astronomy #astrophotography #canon #planitpro #alerta

Did anyone see a “star” near the Moon on Sunday night? It was no star. When I looked through my telescope I could clearly see the ring world hovering above the lunar landscape. Behold #saturn #moon #conjunction

The solar system has one less comet. 🥹 Comet ATLAS (C/2024 S1) melted away today when it passed within 0.008 AU of the sun. Comet ATLAS initially showed promise in September by brightening significantly, suggesting it might survive its close approach to the Sun and put on a spectacular show. But it ultimately disintegrated. We hoped it might shine like the famous Kreutz Comet Ikeya-Seki did in 1965.

C/2023 A3 is a very dusty comet but now beginning to show tell tale signs of a growing blue/green coma around the nuclear region. Imaged with a Redcat51 form @NLOastronomy

Despite the clouds and moonlight, the comet was a magnificent sight. The brightness was 1m5 but the 10° tail was visible without any problem. C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS 2024 oct. 13 17.35 UT 17sec NikonZ F-50/2.8 Z50mod Michael Jäger, AZM Martinsberg

My first photo of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) taken from a mountaintop in NH tonight. The tail was naked-eye visible and pretty impressive. #comet #Astrophotography

Bad news for C/2024 S1. It has fragmented up to 4 potential fragments and might rapidly fainting. Good new for C/2023 A3. It maybe get to keep the spotlight after all. #OctoberComets
Looks like comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS) is breaking apart: astronomerstelegram.org/?rea… - in this image from October 8 the nucleus "is no longer clearly observable, and the photometric pattern resembles that seen in the nuclear region of comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) at the time of its breakup."

Back from Namibia, we have brought a lot of images of comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. The GIF shows the comet on September 30, when the solar wind gave the comet a special appearance. Image taken at Farm Tivoli with a FSQ 106/3.8. The animation covers a period of 30 minutes.
