This morning, I captured another image of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) from the @LCOAstro site in the Atacama Desert, Chile 🇨🇱✨😱. The view was absolutely stunning !!! The comet is clearly visible visually. My gear: Nikon D810a camera with a 135mm lens. Exposure: 20 x 30 seconds. #Comet #Astronomy #Atacama #chile #TsuchinshanATLAS #cometa #CometC2023A3 #Tsuchinshan #C2023A3 #FollowTheComet
I captured this image of the great Comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS from Carnegie Las Campanas observatory in the Atacama desert in Chile. The comet was setting behind the domes of Magellan 6.5-m telescope, and what a majestic moment it was ! 🤩 The comet survived intense solar heating while undergoing partial disintegration, reached an exceptional peak apparent magnitude of −3.8, and displayed prominent dust and ion tails that made it the brightest and most spectacular comet of the recent times.
I captured this image on the high-altitude plains (~15000 ft) in Bolivia as the Milky Way was rising above a small pond in the desert. What a serene scene ! The cold weather and lack of oxygen made it challenging, but the experience was unforgettable 😅

Ionospheric rainbow 🌈 Airglow, northern lights, zodiacal light and the Milky Way... A lot of astronomical curiosities here
While it’s been cloudy in the Atacama Desert, the Moon was shining brightly on the other side of the world over Japan 😅 Wonderful shot by Kagaya ! The clouds add a really nice touch.
The forecast looked great and the plan was ready, but nature made a last-minute correction. Sometimes plans don’t quite work out weather-wise, even in the Atacama Desert. The Moon appeared behind thick clouds ☁️ Next time ! ✨
The Strawberry Moon rises tonight 🌕
Named for the wild strawberry harvest season, this June full moon has long been a seasonal marker for Algonquian and other Indigenous peoples. If skies are clear, step outside for a look 🤩
Amazing capture of noctilucent clouds lighting up the twilight skies over Ireland last night ! 🤩 Here in central Chile we’re far from the latitudes where these rare night-shining clouds appear, but if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere right now, look up during twilight !

What a remarkable image of a “jellyfish cloud” in the sky from the SpaceX launch! 🚀 The rocket and its plume are so high up they’re already lit by the sun, while it’s still dark down here before sunrise. Great capture !
Just took off at night with @LATAM_CHI here in the north of Chile. What a stunning view ! Big thanks to the pilots and the crew for a smooth, pleasant flight. Appreciate it ! 🙏
Fun fact: At night, pilots often see distant city lights up to 200+ miles away due to the clearer, less turbulent air and lack of daytime haze 😉
‼️ Epic cockpit view ✨A pilot captured glowing noctilucent clouds (NLCs) high in the twilight sky. These are Earth’s highest clouds, floating ~80 km (50 miles) up in the mesosphere on tiny ice crystals. They’re visible at night when sunlight hits them from below the horizon. Stunning capture 🤩

The Milky Way rising above the Hand of the Desert in the Atacama Desert in Chile 🇨🇱 I captured this image a while ago, but it’s still one of my all-time favorites ✨This striking 11-meter concrete sculpture by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal was unveiled in 1992 to symbolize human vulnerability and isolation. Over the past years it has become very popular spot among astrophotographers.
Highly unlikely this is airglow. The images were clearly taken during twilight and the green features appear as bright as twilight segment of the sky. Even extreme airglow reaches only ~20–21 mag/arcsec² in brightness. Civil twilight skies (~13 mag/arcsec²) are thousands of times brighter from scattered sunlight, completely swamping any airglow signal until deep astronomical twilight or full night. @JAtanackov any thoughts ? 🤔
A mysterious green ripple in the sky over Hawaii has flummoxed the government and military, but a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as "airglow" rippled by gravity wave is likely the culprit. bit.ly/4dlKA4U
I captured this magical scene of the Milky Way and Zodiacal light ✨rising above a stunning lagoon in a remote salar deep in the Atacama Desert in Chile. When I was taking the image the silence was absolute and the whole atmosphere felt utterly unearthly ! These fragile ecosystems are incredibly precious and must be protected 🙏
Wow, absolutely stunning capture of airglow ! 🤩 Those are rippling green bands of light in the night sky caused by atmospheric gravity waves disturbing the thin layer of glowing atomic oxygen (emitting at ~557.7 nm around 95–100 km altitude) in the upper atmosphere.
The stunning power of nature in its full force 🤩 Another amazing capture from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
‼️ Beautiful noctilucent clouds glowing over the Zaanse Schans windmills and still waters at 4 AM ✨ What a an amazing capture by talented Dutch photographer Albert Dros ! These rare ice-crystal formations (Earth’s highest clouds at 76–85 km) catch sunlight from below while the landscape below is still dark. Those who are in the Northern Hemisphere, look up in the twilight sky ! Have you ever seen noctilucent clouds?
Look at this incredibly intense airglow I recently captured at Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory in the Atacama Desert in Chile 🇨🇱 You can see these vast red and green bands spanning across the sky from Orion all the way to the Southern Cross and Centaurus. We don’t get to see aurora here in the desert, but airglow still puts on quite a show for us at times. Taken as a single frame on a Sony a7IV and @AstrHori 6/2.8 lens. Has anyone else caught something like this from where you are ?
This is why it’s not always easy working at an observatory in the Atacama Desert. In winter, humidity drops below 20% (!) and that’s a real challenge. On the positive side, it’s still pretty warm for the season 😅
Lunar halo above the dome of Baade 6.5-m Magellan telescope at Carnegie Las Campanas in the Atacama desert in Chile 🇨🇱 I captured this image a while ago and what a sight it was ! 🤩 A lunar halo is a bright ring of light (often 22° in radius) encircling the Moon, formed when moonlight is refracted and dispersed through hexagonal ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.
