📢Tomorrow the Parliamentary committee @EU_ENV will vote on deregulating #NGTs.🚫Gene edited crops won't solve world hunger - rather the opposite as patents on NGT plants threaten farmers' & breeders' access to genetic diversity and thereby food security. sdhsprogram.org/gene-edited-…

Smallholders should be allowed to use/exchange protected varieties as a subsistence strategy. 2 weeks ago, @UPOVint members failed to formulate ambitious next steps to provide better perspectives for smallholder farmers. #noncommercialuse Write up here 👉sdhsprogram.org/document/no-…

Well written longread about the dispossesion of indigenous #seeds being a last battleground of the neocolonial appropriation of Africa's productive resources, smashing farmers' economic self-determination, increasing dependencies. Disconcerning.
@viacampesina @GRAIN_org @IGG_NL thenation.com/article/world/…

Claiming naturally occurring genetic variations as an ‘invention’ is a threat to conventional breeding and encourages undesirable market concentration. This sets a legal precedent, the @EPOorg should stop granting patents like this. @PlantumNL @SeedNL @RijkZwaanNL @BionextTweets
Today we file an opposition against a patent on maize with improved digestibility used for animal feed held by the German company @KWS_Group. It claims as well naturally occurring genetic variations for conventional breeding and the harvest. PR: no-patents-on-seeds.org/en/n…

To escape the #debt-#hunger trap, poorer “countries have to build self-reliance. Instead of importing from outside, we have to rely on our own soil, people, & knowledge to produce our #food. We have to change the financial structures” @Million_Belay tells @AJEnglish
Here is the actual report that went to air, about @IPESfood @Million_Belay new report linking debt to hunger via unsustainable food systems. This topic is so important to me, because in #Bangladesh #Rohingya refugee camps, I met many severe acute malnourished children and their mothers, and understood the full horror of systems that prevent people from eating enough.@UNFPABangladesh

Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) empowers small scale farmers and gives greater control over their livelihood. Perhaps no group benefits more from the PPB approach than poor rural women, because in many places they play a key role in managing plant genetic resources.
