Congratulations to Dr. Brian Schubert @schubertBA, one of North America’s top geoscientists, according to the Geological Society of America! Schubert, professor and director of UL Lafayette’s School of Geosciences, has been named to the inaugural “50 Under 50” class recognizing mid-career geoscientists whose contributions to research, education, leadership, service and mentorship are helping advance the field. His research spans environmental change, plant physiology and Earth’s climate history, but Schubert says his most gratifying work is teaching and mentoring students. Congratulations, Dr. Schubert, on this well-deserved recognition!

We present new high-resolution carbon isotope data from #Svalbard to investigate atmospheric CO2 during the Middle Devonian, particularly the Taghanic crisis (1/3).

We find that CO2 levels fluctuated on short timescales (<100,000 years), from background levels of 623 ppm (range: 473 to 773 ppm) to as much as 1373 ppm (range: 882 to 2082 ppm) during the Taghanic Crisis (2/3).

Hey @robperillo! What's your guess? @ULGeosciences is playing "Is it Gumbo Weather* yet?" *defined as: 1st day with daily maximum temperature <70F. Last year (2024) was latest in last 120 years. We had to wait til Nov 20! We are not hoping for a repeat.
