UL Lafayette’s new Critical AI Studies minor helps students evaluate AI-generated information, recognize its limitations and biases, and consider its ethical, social and human impact. The first minor of its kind in Louisiana, the interdisciplinary program is open to students in any major. bit.ly/4y50Iis

Louisiana rice producers and industry partners donated 2,500 pounds of Louisiana-grown rice — enough for an estimated 12,500 servings — to UL Lafayette’s Campus Cupboard. The donation from Falcon Rice Mill, Supreme Rice Mill and 4 Sisters Rice Mill grew out of the inaugural Ragin’ Cajun Rice Festival and will help provide food assistance to students who need it. Thank you to our partners in Louisiana’s rice industry for their generosity and support of our students! Read more at: louisiana.edu/news/louisiana…

What happens when today’s musicians dig into the archives and bring Louisiana roots music back to life? Dry Bones, a new video series from the Center for Louisiana Studies and the filmmakers behind Roots of Fire, brings contemporary musicians face-to-face with music preserved in the Center’s archives — then follows as they transform what they discover into original studio performances. The series premieres Oct. 8 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts as a part of the kickoff to Festivals Acadiens et Créoles. New episodes will follow weekly through Dec. 9. Congratulations to Dr. Brian Schubert @schubertBA, one of North America’s top geoscientists, according to the Geological Society of America! Schubert, professor and director of UL Lafayette’s School of Geosciences, has been named to the inaugural “50 Under 50” class recognizing mid-career geoscientists whose contributions to research, education, leadership, service and mentorship are helping advance the field. His research spans environmental change, plant physiology and Earth’s climate history, but Schubert says his most gratifying work is teaching and mentoring students. Congratulations, Dr. Schubert, on this well-deserved recognition!
