90approx in attendance, listen to members, inc founding members, stories of what a public intellectual space is & can do ... these are not stories about a "public facing institute" to use the current board's lingo but a real project of public pedagogy for everyone #saveIPCS

Seems a very odd time to be closing something like this... we're in the middle of a war that originates with British colonialism...as does the Rohingya genocide and the Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka...

A great letter emphasizing the importance of dedicated places where we can think together...and talk #saveIPCS #transformIPCS

The Board's decision to close down the Institute has compelled the founding director, Phillip Darby to speak out in clarification of his position on the decision, and in favour of our campaign to keep the Institute open.

We're shocked to learn of the attempt to close the IPCS - it had been a space that welcomed events by casualised academics from Monash.
Please read and sign this letter @OverlandJournal
Sign - "For the past five years, there has only been a single Aboriginal director on the IPCS Board, who resigned earlier this year, and two People of Colour (POC) who have also resigned. This is not a condemnation of individual directors.

These events were supported by many community groups keen to learn from Palestinian, Jewish and Indigenous scholars and writers. The series that triggered a closing down of the Institute was On Courageous Writing.
Here you can listen to the recording of the two Palestine events held in March, after which member led initiatives were terminated upon the Board's decision to close the building one week after hosting these events.

Edward Said, one of the founders of the discipline, was a Palestinian and by that very fact was anti-colonial. He wasn't examining the colonial just to reproduce it. I think this email illustrates what we are up against and why the transformation of the Institute is necessary.

and with an "anti colonial project" that's in "stark contrast" to its own vision. If the "postcolonial" isn't inherently "anti-colonial" what is it that the Institute thinks it's educating the public about?

The part that's really telling about the political literacy of the Institute & failure to educate on contemporary debates on a 'colonial past' is how it describe effort to include people on the board who've experienced colonial violence & racism as a "racialised" board.

Replying to @jtaur1 @theprimalplot
If the Board had any connection to those with experience of colonialism and racism, they'd step down rather than shut down the institute because their limited vision and focus is passe.

Questioning the Board = aggression; wanting a critical focus = hostility; any demands not from them = 'trenchant'; asking for diversity in representation = 'racialisation'. That email and attempts to protect white privilege is what is bringing the Institute into disrepute

If the response from the Institute worries you, please come along to the meeting on Thursday so we can discuss what can be done about preventing the building from being sold and to consider proposals for how it can be transformed. Details in the @saveipcs poster! please follow!

Woah - this is seriously f***ed. There is incredibly aggressive repression of pro-Palestine groups and solidarity going rn

As a member of the IPCS I received an email (see below) that described our efforts to involve indigenous & non-white members in disturbing language — “aggression” , “hostility”, “trenchant”. This is not only inaccurate, misleading but racist in its description.

My stake in this is personal. I spoke at this event with Jeanine Leane and Ramzy Behroud about publishing Palestinian voices in Australia. Carlos should not have been punished for programming this vital conversation.

An important update to the campaign to transform the Institute of Postcolonial Studies as the current board announces plans to dissolve the institution prior to the upcoming AGM and in defiance of a member resolution for organisational accountability.

This campaign has been building for many months as IPCS members and affiliates have been trying to transform the largely white and elite governance structure of an institution for the analysis of colonised peoples and cultures that was for a brief window something so much better

URGENT: The all-white, non-democratically elected IPCS board is trying to sell the North Melbourne building (for around $6 million) and dissolve the institute rather than cede leadership to an elected First Nations and POC board. WE MUST STOP THEM NOW! Please follow @saveipcs!!
!!ALERT!! The current Board of the Institute of Postcolonial Studies (IPCS) is attempting to dissolve & sell the building in North Melbourne behind the backs of over 200 IPCS members!! If you want to #saveipcs and support us to #transformipcs you can sign: forms.gle/deFhazGgpgXe1kTd7

This is outrageous. Critical sites of learning and anti racist efforts and frameworks are under attack. They want concepts like racism out of our classrooms. Don't let this happen. Don't let them whitewash our institutions.
