Seeing someone use software you designed on the train is the best feeling in the world. Better than any metric.

recently i learned there are entire online communities dedicated to archiving those patterns inside of envelopes that exist to obscure the information, so when you hold it up to light, you can't read the contents. people even make art out of it (creds in alt text)

Interesting paper w compelling concrete proposals. “If we do not deliberately engineer institutions capable of absorbing AI’s architecture, we risk .. leaving this technology’s transformative potential unrealized. Reverse alignment is not a theoretical exercise but a prerequisite for AI-driven prosperity by unleashing new levels of collective consciousness and capacity.”

Cleaning up your files is like cleaning up your room, you stumble across old abandoned projects that now brings a smile to your face.

feel so lucky to *finally* have a copy of ted nelson’s 1974 computer lib/dream machines, thanks to amazing friends like @ojoshe who bump into acolytes of ted nelson and mail books halfway across the world!
first stumbled across this rare book through a professor back in college. to think that such brilliant, enormous thoughts were siphoned straight from the mind of nelson!

the coolest thing i learned in design school wasn't what good design is. it was how to sell an idea.
take bjarke ingels as an example, people give him billions to make buildings that are almost satirically efficient solutions to large problems.
he is living proof that the way to win someone over isn’t convincing them that your idea is the “best”. but showing people it is absurd that your idea doesn’t already exist.

ALT Two stacked screenshots. The top has a sage green background, the yellow title “Exploring Seed Catalogs at the Internet Archive,” and rows of vintage seed catalog covers labeled Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables. The bottom has a black background and white text reading “Proposition: That the American Dream is at the expense of the American Negro,” with video stills, portraits, book covers and web pages about the 1965 Baldwin and Buckley debate.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “problem.” The trolley works just fine, no?

An underrated insight from cybernetics is that you can build something precise out of imprecise parts. Individual components can be inaccurate if you have a negative feedback loop, because the output depends mostly on how accurately you measure it, not the quality of the parts.

Long before the word “narrative” made its way into role titles, communications was penning company stories
There is of course the executional work of launches announcements etc. necessary. But the big picture is what I most like about the profession. The fun little stories I spin / weave
I also like the humility behind communications. Under every pitch is a very tailored and painstakingly researched target:
You!
You, dear reader, matter more than the subject / client. Because if their comms is to increase shareholder value, it’s through you 😋
And so to love communications is to love crawling into the heads of others. Their wants, needs, rituals and routines. Habits and preferences, interests and desires. You have to enjoy scavenging thru it in anyone.
