In Stafford Beer's Brain of the Firm, he says that organizational leaders are "cocooned;" in other words, so removed from the reality of what is going on in their firm that they might as well be asleep. Not just asleep, but dreaming up a pseudo-reality.

Because they are cut off from the day to day activity, whatever they think is going on is much like a dream narrative. It seems meaningful to them, but it is not getting reality-checking information from the senses. They might "hallucinate" strategy based on fantasy.

I figured out a "mental move" I can make in my language-learning endeavors to avoid translating words into English in my head as I read/listen, and doing this has made a huge difference.
When you can't sleep it is good to endeavor to assemble some novel combination of words in case what's going on is that your cognitabolism is suffering from the sacred flame with nothing to burn and you just need to run the forms around until they tucker out and leave you alone.
