STATEMENT | A Defining Moment for Justice and Accountability for the Rohingya
The world is watching. The pursuit of justice continues.
On 19 November 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is scheduled to deliver its judgment in the landmark case of The Gambia v. Myanmar, concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in relation to the Rohingya people.
For the Rohingya community, this is a moment of profound significance. After decades of persecution, violence, forced displacement, and unimaginable suffering, the pursuit of justice and accountability remains central to the struggle for recognition, dignity, and fundamental human rights.
This landmark legal proceeding carries immense importance for Rohingya survivors, victims, and their families. It underscores the importance of international law, the prevention of genocide, and the responsibility to ensure accountability for serious violations of human rights.
As the international community awaits the Court’s judgment, Rohingya Human Rights Initiative (ROHRIngya) calls upon governments, international institutions, human rights organizations, and civil society to maintain their attention and commitment to the Rohingya people.
We further emphasize the importance of ensuring justice, accountability, protection of fundamental rights, and the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland.
Justice must not be delayed. Accountability must not be abandoned. The rights and dignity of the Rohingya people must be upheld.
The Rohingya people’s pursuit of justice deserves the continued attention and solidarity of the international community.

Crimes Against Humanity in Myanmar’s Rakhine State: The Arakan Army’s Own Case (Part I)
Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine State face systematic persecution under Arakan Army (AA) control, including movement restrictions, arbitrary taxation, forced labour, land seizures, and alleged killings and sexual violence. Reports also document forced displacement and the destruction of mosques.
These abuses must be examined beyond individual war crimes. As international human rights lawyer Ashley S. Kinseth argues, the evidence raises serious concerns about possible crimes against humanity, including persecution and forcible transfer of Rohingya from Rakhine to other countries.
The international community must urgently investigate these allegations, ensure accountability, and protect Rohingya civilians’ fundamental rights.

Rohingya refugees fled Myanmar with nothing and rebuilt their lives in India. Now, around 350 families have been evicted from shelters across five plots. They face police scrutiny, trauma, and cuts to water and electricity.
“Now we have been completely thrown away. It seems there is nowhere to go.”
After years of hardship, they are losing their homes and security once again. India must protect Rohingya refugees from forced return to persecution and uphold their dignity and fundamental rights. Refugees deserve safety, not repeated displacement.

In Toronto, Canada.
We participated in an event organized by Justice For All Canada and their partner organization. During the event, a short film was shown featuring heartbreaking testimonies from Rohingya survivors about the genocide committed against the Rohingya and the Palestinians in Gaza.
The organizers also shared their collective advocacy efforts with the Government of Canada, and because of their advocacy efforts, the Canadian government has provided humanitarian support to Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
Several well-known speakers gave speeches at the event.
We honored Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Aguilar, a former U.S. Army officer, whom we were privileged to meet. During the event, he has given a powerful speech about the ongoing atrocities and genocide that devastated the Palestinians in Gaza.
The insights he shared about Palestinian children were truly horrific and heartbreaking. As victims of genocide ourselves, his testimonies deeply touched our hearts.
Thank you very much for his powerful speech, and sincere thanks to Justice For All Canada for arranging such a meaningful event.
We appeal to support Justice For All Canada

The Rohingya Human Rights initiative strongly condemns the arrest of Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani, President of MERHROM and a longstanding Rohingya human rights defender.
His activism has highlighted the protection and dignity of Rohingya people facing persecution and genocide in Myanmar, not on harming Malaysia or its people.
Zafar has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and govt. Of Malaysia should ensure full due process and respect his fundamental rights. Any attempt to detain and deport him to Myanmar would raise serious protection concerns, given the risks Rohingya face there. R4R urge the Malaysian authorities to release him immediately.

Returning people without individualized protection assessments could expose them to serious human rights violations.
