Myanmar: I am horrified by the latest military airstrikes on Rakhine State, which reportedly killed at least 50 people at a market. Refugees from Myanmar need to be protected, not forced to return. My statement today: ohchr.org/en/press-releases/…

❓ What if the most important #genocide judgment in a decade were to be delivered tomorrow... and states are not ready? ⚖️ A new joint paper by @SpecialCouncil (SAC-M) and Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) argues that the world cannot afford a "wait-and-see" approach. The forthcoming @CIJ_ICJ judgment in The #Gambia v. #Myanmar could take five plausible forms: a finding of genocide; partial attribution; failure to prevent or punish genocide; a breach of provisional measures; or a negative outcome. Each demands a different response. 💡 Whatever the outcome, the impact of the judgment depends on what states will do to implement it. This is why states must prepare now. A passive response would fail the #Rohingya and squander one of the most important accountability openings in recent years. For the Rohingya, this is not only about the judgment, but about what the international community can do to continue to support them, no matter the outcome. 🔗 Read the position paper: legalactionworldwide.org/acc…

You may be able to bomb people into a room, but you cannot bomb them into trusting you. Peace begins when people are no longer forced to choose between survival and dialogue.
Could airstrikes by Myanmar's military government lead to peace talks?

Pak Anwar knows very well that there is no way to monitor the situation on the ground in Myanmar to "ensure those being returned are protected..." He also knows that UNHCR @Refugees has been assisting Malaysia in supporting the Rohingya refugee population and has been working with his government to set up a system for asylum seekers. The January 2026 launch of the Dokumen Pendaftaran Pelarian (DPP) was an important step towards a nationally-owned solution that would protect people forced to flee their country and create a framework for their temporary status in Malaysia. But Pak Anwar has instead decided to throw this option out the window and forcibly repatriate vulnerable Myanmar refugees back into a war zone where women and children are being killed by air strikes when they go out to buy vegetables. On top of this, Malaysia announced they will soon host Myanmar's tormentor--the very man who orchestrated the genocidal attacks on the Muslim-minority Rohingya and continues to foment religious hatred to this day, and who then launched the 2021 coup that plunged the country into wholesale civil war. I again urge Malaysia to return to the DPP process, work with @unhcr_malaysia on durable solutions, end this dangerous refoulement of Myanmar refugees, and respect the @ASEAN #FivePointConsensus with regard to engagement with the illegal Naypyidaw regime. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
PM Anwar Ibrahim said it is unfair to condemn Malaysia over its decision to repatriate Myanmar refugees. He said Malaysia is in continuous engagement with Myanmar to ensure those being returned are protected and provided with the necessary facilities. 🧵1

Another junta massacre in #Myanmar.💔 Airstrikes on a market in Kyauktaw, #Rakhine State, killed at least 49 civilians & injured 58. @ASEAN & the intl. community must hold the junta accountable. ❌ No silence. ❌ No impunity. More ⤵️ bit.ly/4hjXl25

Urgently calling on PM @anwaribrahim & the Malaysian authorities to suspend refoulement of Rohingya refugees. Reports of air strikes in Rakhine State--which have killed more than 50 people just this week--clearly demonstrate the conditions do not exist for safe returns @MalaysiaMFA
Malaysia begins repatriating Myanmar nationals despite warnings from the UN refugee agency and rights groups that conditions in the war-torn country remain unsafe for their return. #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

Horrific reports are coming from #Kyauktaw , #Rakhine state today. The #MyanmarMilitary has bombed a crowded market and the Kissapanadi Bridge, killing at least 33 people and injuring dozens more. People from different communities are among those killed and injured. Our sources tell us at least 13 #Rohingya are dead or missing, including children aged just 9, 11, 12, 13 and 16. The brutality of the #MyanmarMilitary is relentless. For years it has bombed communities, slaughtered civilians and committed horrific crimes across #Myanmar with impunity. Those responsible must face justice. The international community has failed for too long to stop these crimes and hold the Myanmar military accountable. That failure is costing lives.
