Watching the timeline fill up with racist, xenophobic and profoundly misanthropic commentary, invariably delivered by people congratulating themselves on having fashioned some spectacularly clever joke, is an irony almost too exquisite to articulate. There is something uniquely contemptible about ridiculing people from developing nations for having the audacity to build something. People are pouring their time, money, ambition, creativity and, in many cases, years of their lives into trying to create something of consequence. Perhaps they will succeed. Perhaps they will fail spectacularly. That is the prerogative of anyone brave enough to actually attempt something. But either outcome is infinitely more respectable than sitting behind a screen, luxuriating in the delusion of cultural superiority and manufacturing cheap punchlines about someone’s nationality, ethnicity, accent or circumstances. And spare me the sanctimonious implication that fraud, incompetence or moral bankruptcy somehow belongs to a particular geography or complexion. Some of the most egregious grifters I have encountered have been sitting comfortably in expensive villas, speaking in the “right” accent, possessing the “right” passport and apparently mistaking those accidents of birth for evidence of intellectual or moral superiority. A scammer is a scammer. An idiot is an idiot. A reprehensible human being is a reprehensible human being. Melanin, nationality and pronunciation are not diagnostic criteria for character. Criticise bad products. Expose fraud. Mock absurd ideas. Hold founders accountable. There is an enormous difference between scrutinising what somebody has built and reducing the person who built it to a racial or national stereotype. If your entire comedic repertoire collapses the moment racism is removed from it, perhaps you were never particularly funny to begin with. And if watching someone from a developing country attempt to build something makes you feel superior rather than curious, the embarrassment is not theirs. It is entirely, spectacularly yours. So, with all the decorum this deserves: go fuck yourself. Fortunately at @surgence_io we bring on people for their skills and not the other way around. Lessons in there.
