MakSPH Celebrates Successful Completion of Dr. Claus Thomas’ Fellowship
Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), under the leadership of Dean @RhodaWanyenze , congratulates Dr. Claus Augustino Thomas upon the successful completion of his Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Cluster of Research under CoRE PREPS.
On Friday, the CoRE team hosted a celebration dinner to mark his successful fellowship. The occasion brought together @RhodaWanyenze, Dr. Suzanne Kiwanuka, @rawleng , @bulafudouglas and members of the CoRE team.
Dr. Thomas, a Lecturer of Microbiology at @Sfuchas joined MakSPH in March this year. His research work during the fellowship focused on community-based surveillance during the 2024 Mpox Clade Ib outbreak in Uganda’s border districts of Amuru and Kasese.
The findings of the research highlighted how previous outbreak experience, community health workers and existing surveillance systems supported the response, while financing gaps, limited logistics, understaffing, stigma and cross-border coordination challenges constrained surveillance.
Beyond research, Dr. Thomas contributed to research collaborations and mentorship of students and early-career researchers, strengthening knowledge exchange between Uganda and Tanzania.

@newvisionwire Feature | How Climate Change Is Fuelling Youth Migration
Weekend Vision's 5–6 September 2026 edition reports on how climate shocks are pushing young Ugandans from rural communities into secondary cities, exposing them to disrupted livelihoods, health risks and strained services, drawing on findings from MakSPH's Cities of Youth project.
Running 2024–2028 with DANIDA support, Cities of Youth brings together @Makerere, @UniSouthDenmark and @TuftsUniversity to study climate-driven migration in Mbale and Mbarara, Uganda's leading destination cities for climate-displaced youth. @rawleng leads the Uganda study as Principal Investigator, with Prof. @SsaliSarah as Co-Investigator.
The project generates evidence on how climate migration affects young people's livelihoods, health and well-being, and on host cities' capacity to respond, to inform policies that protect migrants and support receiving communities.

The symposium brought together researchers, policymakers, academics, civil society representatives and young people to discuss emerging evidence on climate-related youth migration.
The event shared findings from research conducted in Mbale and Mbarara under the Cities of Youth Project, focusing on young people’s livelihoods, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, access to services, and the capacity of cities to support incoming youth.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor–Academic Affairs, Prof. Sarah Ssali, Dean of Makerere University School of Public Health, Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze, and other stakeholders.
The project is implemented in collaboration with the Institute of Gender and Development Studies.

Wrapped up the day at the National Symposium on “Climate-Induced Youth Migration and the Urban Future of Uganda.” Organized at @Makerere
Climate change is no longer a distant environmental concern; it is a socio-economic force reshaping where our young people live, work and build their futures. As Barack Obama reminded us, “Climate change is no longer some far-off problem; it is happening here, it is happening now.” This reality calls for climate-responsive and sustainable urban planning.
To safeguard Uganda’s future, we must place young people at the centre of climate governance, sustainable urban development and policy-making. We may not always be able to build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.
By creating resilient livelihoods and opportunities within local communities, we can ensure that young people are not merely surviving climate-induced displacement, but becoming leaders of Uganda’s urban transformation. Our path forward must be youth-centred, inclusive and firmly action-oriented. 🌱🇺🇬
