Study Finds Improved VHT Support and Community Trust in Central Uganda A @Makerere University School of Public Health study found improved Village Health Team (VHT) support and community satisfaction in Masaka City, Masaka District and Bukomansimbi District, alongside persistent medicine shortages. Prof. @NazMTumwesigye led the study, working alongside Ms. Claire Biribawa, Ms. Cissie Namanda, Ms. Mary Nakafeero and Mr. Humphrey Atwijukye. He presented the findings yesterday at the @MinofHealthUG’s 4th National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Conference and Community Health Workers Summit at Speke Resort, Munyonyo. The study assessed VHT satisfaction with support under the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (@kofihuganda) and Ministry of Health community health workers project, and community satisfaction with VHT services. It compared 2023 and 2026 assessments using surveys, interviews and focus-group discussions. Training, bicycle ownership, compensation, community trust and household visits improved. All surveyed VHTs received at least one form of financial or non-financial compensation in 2026, compared with 46.1% in 2023, while community satisfaction rose from 87% to 93.6%. However, only one-third of VHTs had first-aid supplies in 2026. The proportion of sick children assessed by VHTs increased, while the proportion treated by VHTs declined and treatment at health facilities increased. Participants recommended increased funding for childhood illness medicines, better equipment, longer digital reporting training and continued supervision. These recommendations highlight the importance of matching gains in VHT training, equipment and community trust with reliable supplies and sustained support to strengthen care at household level. #CommunityHealth #VillageHealthTeams #PrimaryHealthCare #KOFIH #MakSPH #HealthPromotionUg26

During the two-day workshop, participants refined information on organisations supporting community health workers, including organisational roles and relationships, and expanded the mapping to capture funding, planning and community health information systems. They developed preliminary system maps around three priorities: disease prevention, detection and notification, and availability of essential medicines and supplies. These maps explored relationships influencing routine services and outbreak response. The team will further refine and validate the outputs through stakeholder engagement in Luwero, Mubende and Kasese districts. National and district perspectives will inform modelling and planning tools to support resource allocation and implementation of Uganda’s National Community Health Strategy.

New MakSPH Study Highlights Opportunities to Strengthen Malaria Prevention in Uganda A new study led by researchers at @Makerere University School of Public Health has identified opportunities to strengthen malaria prevention in Uganda by addressing the social and environmental conditions that contribute to transmission. Published in PLOS Global Public Health in September 2026, the study was authored by Assoc. Prof. @DavidMusoke14, @EdwinahAtusingw, Allan Ssembuusi and @SuzieNakalawa of MakSPH, alongside Kevin Deane of @OpenUniversity, United Kingdom. The study explored barriers and opportunities to addressing social determinants of malaria, including poverty, poor housing, inadequate sanitation and limited access to healthcare. Conducted in Wakiso District, the qualitative study involved 100 participants through 10 focus group discussions, 11 in-depth interviews and 14 key informant interviews with community members, health workers, local leaders and other stakeholders. The findings identified three major barriers: an emphasis on treatment over prevention, inadequate coordination among institutions and partners, and complacency arising from malaria's persistent presence in communities. The study also identified two opportunities: the involvement of multiple stakeholders in malaria control and existing government and community structures, including health inspectors, malaria focal persons, and community health workers. The authors recommend building on these structures through stronger prevention, multisectoral coordination, and community engagement to address the underlying drivers of malaria transmission and advance Uganda's elimination efforts.
