Unnecessary code is not as harmless as I used to think. It sends the misleading signal that it's necessary.

Actually, your *team* ruins your codebase, or your *team* creates an awesome codebase. Junior, senior - doesn't matter - a team is a unit and the whole blame-shifting thing is demoralising BS. No code reviews? No mentoring? There's a bigger problem than an inexperienced junior.
