28th to 30th October, Clinical Officers converge for the 28th Annual Scientific Conference under the theme of building resilient health systems for Universal Health Coverage.
Such forums are vital for sharing knowledge, advancing clinical practice, shaping policy and strengthening collaboration.
KUCO has a role in ensuring that professional advancement goes hand in hand with workforce welfare, fair remuneration, decent working conditions and career progression. We must translate knowledge into better healthcare and advocacy into meaningful change.

SECOND EBOLA CASE DETECTED EARLY: CONTACT TRACING AND QUARANTINE WORKING
Peterson Wachira HSC retweeted
Victor Ofula - Senior Research Scientist, KEMRI: Even if the first case was missed at different points of entry, a health worker was able to identify and suspect the case at the hospital, and it turned out to be positive. That tells us the systems are working, and we are better prepared #CitizenDayBreak

Dr Martins Chibueze - Head, Health Emergencies, WHO Kenya: There's no evidence of an ongoing Ebola outbreak in Kenya following the confirmation of one imported case. Contacts are being monitored, symptomatic individuals have tested negative, and WHO is working with the government to strengthen surveillance and coordinate the response #CitizenDayBreak

Victor Ofula - Senior Research Scientist, KEMRI: Once a suspected Ebola case is identified, a sample is taken for PCR testing at two laboratories, and the patient is isolated to prevent possible transmission. The results are compared, and further verification is done before a positive case is announced. If you suspect a case in the community, refer the person to a hospital for assessment and testing #CitizenDayBreak

Peterson Wachira - National Chairman, KUCO: You can't use one measure to prevent the entry of a virus, and you can't close your borders to a public health outbreak. Screening at points of entry may only contribute 20% to 30% or less, so we need a multifaceted approach, including trained health workers, community awareness and early detection #CitizenDayBreak

Peterson Wachira - National Chairman, KUCO: Without the government, the community and health workers working together, we cannot fight this outbreak. The community must report alerts and avoid stigma, health workers need proper training and protection, and the government must provide the necessary support. We did not fail; we were able to identify the case before it got to the community #CitizenDayBreak

Victor Ofula - Senior Research Scientist, KEMRI: Even if Ebola was missed at the point of entry, clinicians at the hospital detected the case, and results were released within days. Under the 7-1-7 framework, we detected, notified and responded within the required timelines, with 88.5% of contacts identified and monitored. The system worked #CitizenDayBreak

Dr Martins Chibueze - Head, Health Emergencies, WHO Kenya: Kenyans should remain alert but not panic. Contact tracing and monitoring must continue, while misinformation and stigma must be tackled. We do not support border closures because they can push people to use unauthorised routes, making them harder to trace, while disrupting livelihoods and trade. The priority is early detection, risk communication and community cooperation #CitizenDayBreak

Victor Ofula - Senior Research Scientist, KEMRI: Ebola Bundibugyo is a serious disease, with a case fatality rate of about 30% to 50%. It is not airborne but spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Early symptoms include fever, headache and muscle pain, which can progress to vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding. Travel history and contact with infected persons are key to identifying suspected cases #CitizenDayBreak

Peterson Wachira - National Chairman, KUCO: In Sierra Leone, misinformation led people to avoid health facilities, while health workers fled after colleagues died. We are seeing similar challenges in the DRC, where misinformation and violence are hampering the Ebola response. We need both a security mission and a health mission to contain the outbreak at its source and protect the region #CitizenDayBreak
Peterson Wachira: Kenya has the capacity to respond to Ebola.
You need to come out as soon as you feel symptoms of the virus to get treatment.

Peterson Wachira: Sometime back, I was here and said Ebola getting into Kenya was a matter of when, not if.
The outbreak in DRC has surpassed any other outbreak; Over 4,000 people have died since May 2026.
We must audit how we do screening at the airport and at our border points.
We must intensify training for our healthcare workers, especially the frontline workers.

UNBECOMING CONDUCT OF THE CHIEF OFFICER IN KAKAMEGA
This is the Chief Officer for medical services in kakamega county.
Clinical Officers conducted a peaceful procession to petition the county officials on the prolonged strike.
The Chief Officer came out hurling insults at professionals arrogantly dismissing them as 'small people' who he can't address, assaulting and threatening officials.
It seems this culture is taking root, first was Makueni and now Kakamega.
Any manager or leader who cannot control emotions is a liability to their institution.
@BarasaFernandes should fire this 'all important chief'.
All Clinical Officers in Kakamega will remain on strike and will continue demonstrating in line with article 37. – at Athi River, Kenya
My sincere condolences to @MarthaKarua, family and friends on the passing of your father. He was a good and impactful teacher basing on your values and principles. I pray that God grants you strength and fortitude to accept His will. Amen
Good morning and congratulations @KNUNOFFICIAL @sethpanyako on your RTWF. My advise is that you keep another strike notice ready to push for implementation. We entered the same in January and even registered RTWF in court but had to strike again. Wishing you all the best. Cc @kmpdu @KenyaGovernors @HonAdenDuale @Davji @MiskellahMD
