not to be a dick but this is VERBATIM what hoardes of fic writers say when anything (usually untargeted writing advice) makes them feel insecure about their writing. it sucks but we are the architects of this mindset. stop doing this. writing's hard. take pride in your shit.

loving the posts that are like “this is so unserious it’s not art it’s just FAN FICTION 😂” with 2000000000000 likes. did you know that all writing is writing. can you read this real quick

just saw someone saying “i’m compiling a list of authors who don’t consent to the drives so we know who to avoid in the future and never share their works” if you have this much time on your hands pick up a good book and improve your reading comprehension. you need it

Have you considered respecting authors wishes and copyright law and waiting 2-4 weeks for ao3 to be restored what is wrong with you people? Our work is being stolen daily and you need marvel characters to fist each other so badly you're serving up entire catalogues for free.
fichub is no longer turning ao3 fics into epubs bc the writers went in there threatening to throw lawyers at the one (1) person running the site you can notttt make this shit up

I think people forget that, many times, fanfiction is just a way for writers to present a theory or interpretation of a character or event, so community engagement doesn’t literally mean people kissing the ground they walk on. They just want to find people to nerd out with.

"we want to acknowledge the joy this has brought readers" well i don't! readers deserve nothing!

maybe we ARE in a literacy crisis if 125k people don't know the difference between “download for personal use” and “reupload to external websites without consent”
“i didn’t consent to people sharing my work” you kinda did when you uploaded it to the public archive with the big download button on it

if u cared about authors u would make the drive opt-in versus opt-out, but no that would limit the number of fics you can upload, so u do it this way, where we have to rely on the conscientiousness of unpaid volunteers who will likely be overwhelmed by volume soon enough

its so crazy how ao3 being down for like 3 weeks could have led to people boosting writers' other socials and connecting with them elsewhere and asking them to crosspost themselves/creating webrings but that would require readerbases having maturity levels above a third grader

what i’m hearing is that people are incredibly dependent on being able to access and read fic but apparently hold a lot of derision towards fic writers. make it make sense lol

your "official" stance, give me a break, you're not an institution you're just some grabby-fingered assholes who steal people's art.

i read their response here and it baffles me that they don't see the problem with this. it shouldn't be the default assumption that they'd consent to this. again, ao3 is not gone. there's no urgency that all of this should be necessary

ridiculous. writers don't need to fill a form to remove themselves from this drive. it's you who have to obtain the permission from them before uploading anything to the drive. a massive fic drive like this is very unnecessary. ao3 will be back in a few weeks. you'll survive.

Genuinely, like. My take on it, and a VERY common take of actual IP holders, is: Commissions, specifically, are fine. No matter what the commission is- writing or art. The problem is when you then sell access or mass produce it, such as writing a fanfiction and then trying to-
i don't think we should demonize fanfic commissions. "you shouldn't profit from copyrighted material" isn't it the same as as artists selling fanart commissions or fanmade merch? sooo many artists do it and no one cares. why is it suddenly an issue when it's fic authors do it?

Ngl, the absolute disdain so many readers have for writers is getting me down and killing my motivation. Like I had no idea just how many people consider writers content dispensers instead of fellow fans sharing their passion and looking for community

did the download button automatically redirect you to the upload button on google drive or are you capable of comprehending them as two separate events
this pretty much sums up the difference in conversation concerning ao3

at this point it's not about fanfic for me. it's about the fact so, so many of you are so comfortable being disgustingly, horrifically inconsiderate and cruel to other human beings. down to calling them parasitic, expendable, replaceable, all for expressing normal human emotion

I need you all to remember this fuck ass ao3 outage is Temporary it is Not Lasting Forever the Data Is Still There. you are not preserving "lost media" the fics will still be there when ao3 comes back. go and read a fucking book or two, saying this as a fic writer
