Legit curious: When does an “operational fee” just become a menu price increase? A longtime restaurant’s menu adds 6% for wages, I-82, insurance, inflation and supply costs. If those are the costs of running the restaurant, why are they a separate charge? @jsidman @tomsietsema

The salmon is listed at $35.95. Add the 6% “operational fee” and it’s $38.11 before tax. The menu says the fee isn’t a tip, and hopes to drop it if “conditions improve.” What would have to improve? And how would diners know?

A longtime restaurant says its 6% fee covers everything from wage increases to inflation and health insurance, but that it doesn’t go directly to staff. Why keep that cost outside the menu price?

Don’t get me wrong I was a @DNC @TheDemocrats staffer in the 2008 presidential election and spent all my time ensuring Obama was elected. But John McCain was a decent person. Sad to see how far the GOP has drifted in the last 18 years.
On this day in 2008, during a town hall-style presidential campaign event, Senator McCain shut down false claims about his presidential opponent, defending then-Senator Obama as a “decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with ... That’s what this campaign is all about.”

Nothing says "we have total control of the Strait of Hormuz" like a deal to import diesel from a war criminal.
NEWS: Trump says Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to supply the US with over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel “to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter.”

What?!?!?! The US punishes India for importing fuel from Russia and threatens 100% tariffs on other countries that do so. And then Trump blithely announces the US is doing the same?
The United States is now importing fuel from Russia, per President Trump.

Seriously @AmericanAir you’ll snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. AA flight 374 DCA to @PHXSkyHarbor landed at 8:44 am. It’s now been 29 mins and we are still sitting on the tarmac and not at the gate yet. Folks are going to start missing connections. Get us to our gate.

finally made it to our gate 32 mins after landing. Nothing like flying 4 /12 hours across the country. Then sitting on the tarmac for 32 mins waiting for your gate to open. This is gate management scheduling issues. Cue the typical response “we thank you for your patience.”

Thanks for making this a super stressful connection @AmericanAir as i am still sitting on the plane waiting to deplane. Argh.

Relying on parking/traffic tickets to balance budgets is not the point of a ticket. Tickets are supposed to price out (and/or prevent) antisocial behavior that is non-criminal (or less criminal). @RobertWhite_DC is saying that he is ok with this behavior.
Amid cost of living, should D.C. cut parking ticket fines by HALF? Council member Robert White is proposing that right now. "We cannot balance the District's budget based on parking tickets," White says. White's proposal is coming at an interesting moment. He wants to attach his parking fees cut to a colleague's separate bill that would expand parking enforcement in colleges and business districts. Lot of background friction between members who want to find more revenue for programs and others worried about rising costs for residents.

This would deliver worse outcomes for everyone. Pricing parking appropriately - and pricing the consequences of breaking parking laws - is about managing the curb, which is one of DC's scarcest public assets.
Councilmember @RobertWhite_DC said this morning he wants to HALVE parking fines in D.C. (Will propose as an amendment to @BrianneKNadeau's strategic parking enforcement bill. But @ChmnMendelson says it isn't germane.) White: “Inflation is kicking our butts at the grocery store.”

Can you imagine being gullible enough to hear, “the principal put my kid on drugs and scheduled surgery,” and think, yes, this sounds plausible? At some point this stops being propaganda and becomes an intelligence test.
Tuberville: Can you imagine if your kid would come home one day and says, “I'm taking these drugs. And I'm getting ready to have surgery because my teachers and my principal says I can”

No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter. Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.

One thing I’m interested in watching after Election Day: how quickly does Janeese Lewis George move from campaigning to governing? She’s had something most incoming mayors don’t get: 5 months since the June primary to think about what a JLG administration actually looks like.

January 2 will be here real fast. how quickly does she move? Transition chairs? City Administrator? Deputy Mayors? Who stays from the Bowser administration? Who are the first people at the table? those early decisions matter. They tell you a lot about how someone plans to govern.

there’s a lot waiting for JLG as the next mayor. Federal job losses. A tough budget environment. Housing. Public safety. Downtown. Economic development.I hope we see a transition that moves quickly, brings in really talented people and is ready to go on January 2.
