We may have been quiet since 2022, but as the saying goes: an Elephant never forgets where it came from and apparently, it always finds its way back!
Much appreciation to @HipposFans for tracing the journey. Now, the history lesson is over, the comeback tour begins in Kitgum! โ at Gulu, Uganda
๐บ๐ฌ Gulu Elephants was founded around 2007/08 and quickly became a driving force for rugby in Northern Uganda. The club invested heavily in youth outreach, training secondary school students and providing equipment to nurture local talent.
In 2009, then National Rugby Manager Yayiro Kasasa led an upcountry rugby development program in Mbale, Gulu and Lira. The initiative aimed to establish competitive clubs from the three towns to participate in the #UgandaRugby Unionโs Nile Special Rugby Shield League for the 2010 season.
As a result, Gulu Elephants joined the Nile Special Rugby Shield League in 2010. The club played its first competitive match on Saturday, 6 February 2010, hosting Lira Bulls at Layibi College.
Five years later, Gulu Elephants made history by winning the Nationwide Championship, the competition now known as the XVs Core Status Qualifiers, to earn promotion to the Uganda Rugby Premiership for the 2015/16 season. In doing so, they became the first rugby club from Northern Uganda to reach the countryโs top flight.

๐บ๐ฌ Gulu Elephants: The Return of a Northern Rugby Giant
Gulu Elephants, the first organized #UgandaRugby club in the North, once stood as the regionโs flagship, carrying the pride & passion of Northern rugby.
Then came the storm. Unhealthy sports politics stalled the clubโs progress and forced the Elephants into an unwanted absence from the game.
But the story didnโt end there.
A small but determined group refused to let the clubโs legacy fade. They kept the dream alive, waiting for the right moment. And when opportunity finally knocked, a passionate team of young leaders stepped forward to begin the task of rebuilding one of Northern Ugandaโs most respected rugby institutions.
The road ahead will demand patience, unity, and commitment, but the first steps have already been taken. An interim committee is in place, volunteering its time and expertise to steer the revival, while an eager group of players has returned to training with their sights firmly set on the upcoming Regional 7s.
The legacy is immense, the challenge is significant, but the spirit of the Elephants still stands strong.
Northern Uganda rugby welcomes home one of its pioneers. Uganda rugby welcomes back the Elephants.
๐จ THE ELEPHANTS ARE BACK!
Since then, Gulu Elephants have been quiet. Too quiet.
Now weโre back and our first stop is the Kitgum 7s Circuit of the Northern 7s Series.
The jungle is open.
Kitgum, prepare to be trampled.

If you want to be a climate activists, please read the Paris Agreement (2015). Articles 6 & 9 talk about climate financing.
The Paris Agreement will help us make informed decisions in our advocacy as young people.
There is information out there on climate and biodiversity. As young people we need to take action. Thanks to @UNDPUganda for facilitating knowledge sharing on this.
