Just found this amazing conversation between Na Hong-jin and Lee Chang-dong about HOPE (Youtube has AI generated English subtitles/dubbing). Did not know Lee was one of Na's professors in film school youtu.be/AObeemaF35U?si=cBG3…

I’m glad that everyone possesses such unshakable moral clarity about what they would do if they were an Israeli dissident nonfiction filmmaker. They’d do it all correctly

Fuck you / @ScreenSlate forever!
NYC is the greatest city on earth. You can watch the most important films in history on any day of the week, often for free. Not enough people talk about this because they're kinda hard to find! So I fabled a site that has all the independent film screenings in NYC on any day, all in one place: whatsplaying.nyc It's sortable by year, director, theater, 35mm/70mm, etc. and includes every indy theater + free screenings in the parks, museums, etc. I was reminded this needed to exist by the Feed Me newsletter last week, thanks @Emily_Sundberg My hope is that people find art that speaks to them 💫

Screen Slate is the world's greatest website, and it is beloved by all the best people. I think it has stayed relevant for so long because anyone who reads it can sense that it's run by people who care deeply for this scene and everyone in it.

Not to be a catty naysayer but there's a website, Screen Slate, that's been doing this (and great critical writing) for 15 years. Also, we're talking about NYC, which has the most robust film-going culture ever. "I didn't know this" is not "not enough people talk about this"

Wow.
Who is the most powerful director in Hollywood right now? Or the second-most powerful? What about the third? The 23rd? These are the questions that have occupied our offices for the better part of a year, since senior writer Nate Jones first started mulling his ranking of the most powerful directors in Hollywood. As the industry exits an era of cinematic universes, when mega-producers like Kevin Feige ruled the land, directors seem to matter again. A new generation of cinephiles has come of age, raised on YouTube, Reddit, and Letterboxd. The balance of power has shifted, Puck’s Matt Belloni tells Jones. Over the course of several months, Jones consulted with agents, executives, producers, and publicists — all anonymously, of course — as well as a handful of L.A.-based journalists like Belloni who know the inner workings of Hollywood intimately. Their opinions influenced the list, though the final order was determined by him alone. Find out where — or if — your favorite director landed on the list and who came out as #1: nymag.visitlink.me/pQKwGO
