Hear these veteran journalists reflect on the June primary election and Mayor Mamdani's first 200 days in office and time for questions from the audience!
Yep. He said this to us.
Bill de Blasio himself said last year that the 2019 rent reform law went too far and needs to be revised (to allow landlords to recoup more when they spend on capital improvements) in order to make a rent freeze work. nyeditorialboard.substack.co…
Dear @billmaher,
Chevalier said this to the New York Editorial Board, not the New York Times.

"Elected officials are not allowed to use their office to sway people on how to vote and have typically kept their names off any get-out-the-vote campaigns to ensure they do not inadvertently run afoul of city ethics laws."
The Mayor’s controversial, $54 million office of “Mass Engagement” repeatedly spammed New Yorkers with Mamdani-branded pleas to vote leading up to the primaries this week, in what some critics called a barely legal campaign that had little effect on turnout.

In light of this week's political earthquake in NYC, it's funny to think of the alternate universe where Kathryn Garcia got 9,000 more votes in RCV and is now halfway through the first year of her second term.

This interview with Darializa Avila Chevalier by the New York Editorial Board is just so good. Proper, crunchy wonkish questions and follow-ups. I'm often quite down about the current state of the media but the fact this exists on Substack is so cheering:

The @nyeditboard is *terrific* and so useful. There’s a ton of great local coverage if you look for it.
It’s pretty wild that @nyeditboard (a voluntary effort on the part of a cross-ideological group of experienced journalists) has done so much to enrich and inform local political news coverage. They’re conducting the most substantive, informative interviews of local candidates by far.
Credit also goes to the candidates who’ve agreed to take part, including the ones I find dangerously crazy, misguided, ill-informed, etc.: they seem to appreciate that voters are entitled to understand what they think about issues that matter.
@nyeditboard is a great illustration of how much good conscientious people working together can do.

It's been quite heartening that every candidate other than Schlossberg saw the value in meeting with New York journalists and testing their ideas. Includes, recently, @ReynosoBrooklyn @claireforny @AlexBores @bradlander @danielsgoldman — @MicahLasher, @juliej_won coming soon nyeditorialboard.substack.co…
Schlossberg also the only candidate who just never got back to the @nyeditboard nytimes.com/2026/05/14/nyreg…
Thank you.
I've been consistently impressed by the @nyeditboard interviews with candidates.
Probing conversations that cover a lot of important ground.

Another telling exchange from the NY Editorial Board interview w/ Antonio Reynoso.
"If it was just me and Claire, and Zohran doesn’t endorse her, we’re not even having this conversation. It’s over. But Zohran means something... That’s why it’s a toss-up."
