Can farming be a viable and profitable livelihood in Uganda?
For Ms. Jane Nalunga, SEATINI's Executive Director, the answer is yes. But farmers must begin by understanding the market.
Speaking during a panel discussion on “The Farm End of the Chain” at the UG Economic Forum 2026, Ms. Nalunga emphasised the importance of identifying what the market needs and working backwards to determine what to produce.
This means moving beyond producing first and searching for buyers later. By understanding market demand, farmers can make more informed production decisions, reduce the risk of producing without a ready market and improve their opportunities to earn better returns.
The starting point for profitable farming should be the market, not just the farm.
