We are honoured to have been featured in @TheEconomist in its article, “ An African vision of artificial intelligence”. This recognition affirms our belief that Africa should not simply consume artificial intelligence. We should shape it.
AI built for Africa must reflect our languages, communities, realities, and ambitions. Through local data, open collaboration, and homegrown talent, we can create technology that is more inclusive, relevant, and impactful.
We are grateful to @TheEconomist for highlighting the people and ideas driving Africa’s AI future, and to our team, partners, and community for being part of this journey.

Norrsken House Kigali got a very special visit this Tuesday.
As he's touring #Rwanda to learn more about the country's progress in health, agriculture, and digital public infrastructure, @BillGates stopped by for a conversation with some of Kigali's most ambitious builders, leaders, the institutions shaping Rwanda’s innovation ecosystem, and our partners at the Ministry of ICT & Innovation, Rwanda, and the Rwanda Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
A big thank you to Bill for his curiosity and visit to our ecosystem.
Replying to @RwandaICT
The delegation also toured live demonstrations showcasing the future of digital innovation in Africa @norrskenEA ; before joining a conversation with MoS @yves_Iradukunda, @AmbucycleRW's Founder Dr Loza and @DUmuganda CEO @n_audace, on the transformative potential of AI. Addressing the young founders and entrepreneurs in the room, Bill Gates shared insights on building impactful innovations and harnessing AI, partnerships, and local talent to create solutions that drive inclusive growth.

As the @UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance got underway in Geneva last week, it was great to join a parallel session "From New Delhi to New York: Implementing Inclusive AI Governance in Practice", hosted by CCAOI and TechNiti to share perspectives on India's AI governance ecosystem with attendees from across the globe.
We talked about a pattern we keep seeing in tech regulation: rules written with incumbents in mind end up as barriers to entry for startups. As AI governance frameworks proliferate post the New Delhi Declaration, startups risk paying the price for safety regimes calibrated for larger AI companies. A truly conducive framework has to be built with startups in mind from the start, not retrofitted for them later.
It was great hearing from fellow panelists @n_audace, CEO of @DUmuganda, @merl_syrex- Lead for Data, Algorithms and Policy at @LIRNEasia; and @snegho, Founder of @tech_niti, each bringing a different vantage point. Thank you @AmritaChoudhury and CCAOI, for bringing us together on this platform.
At @SPF_India, we believe the future of inclusive AI governance depends on expanding access to critical resources, strengthening local capabilities, building evidence-based and responsive institutions, enabling responsible innovation, and ensuring the Global South remains an active participant in shaping where global AI governance goes next.

The biggest barrier for AI applications in Africa isn't model complexity -- it's the scarcity of data for the 2000+ spoken languages there.
We just released WAXAL. This open-access dataset delivers 2,400+ hours of high-quality speech data for 27 Sub-Saharan African languages, serving 100M+ speakers. Crucially, this community-rooted effort — led by African organizations — changes the roadmap for truly inclusive voice AI.
Learn more and check out the WAXAL dataset here: goo.gle/4cxNHae

ALT Launched in 2021 as a multi-year collaboration with African academic and community organizations, WAXAL provides the high-quality, permissively licensed data needed to build robust speech systems. Note: We have updated this post announcement with a corrected map. We apologize for the previous error and appreciate the community feedback that helped us correct it.
