Today, as part of the ongoing Rwanda-Singapore Trade and Investment Mission, Hinsley Njila, Founder and CEO of Kilwa Technologies, signed an MoU with @QTSoftwareltd and @DUmuganda to advance collaboration on the development of Kinyarwanda AI-enabled language models.
This partnership aims to strengthen the inclusion of Kinyarwanda in the digital economy while unlocking new opportunities for AI-driven innovation across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and financial services.
A major step toward an AI future that speaks everyone’s language.
This week, we joined @gatesfoundation and 59 other organizations in a global commitment. Over the next five years, our goal is to enable 3.4 billion people whose languages are currently underrepresented in AI to use these tools in their own language and voice.
At Digital Umuganda, this is a mission we strongly share. Through our work building African language datasets, models, and tools, we are contributing to the infrastructure needed for AI to better understand and serve African communities.

We are honoured to have been featured in @TheEconomist in its article, “ An African vision of artificial intelligence”. This recognition affirms our belief that Africa should not simply consume artificial intelligence. We should shape it.
AI built for Africa must reflect our languages, communities, realities, and ambitions. Through local data, open collaboration, and homegrown talent, we can create technology that is more inclusive, relevant, and impactful.
We are grateful to @TheEconomist for highlighting the people and ideas driving Africa’s AI future, and to our team, partners, and community for being part of this journey.

For years, we believed this moment would come. Today, it is finally here.
Welcome to @DeepIndaba 2026. Welcome to Nigeria.
As one of the earliest champions of @DeepIndaba across the continent, @dsn_ai_network has remained committed to expanding access to AI, strengthening research communities, and building pathways for Africans to lead the future of artificial intelligence. Seeing the continent's premier AI and Machine Learning gathering hosted in Nigeria is more than a milestone. It is the fulfilment of a shared vision that has been years in the making.
Hosted at Pan-Atlantic University (@pau_nigeria), Lagos, #DLI2026 brings together Africa's brightest researchers, engineers, founders, policymakers, students, and innovators to advance AI that is rooted in African realities and driven by African excellence.
As a Host Partner, we are honoured to welcome the African AI community and our global collaborators to Nigeria. We look forward to a week of groundbreaking research, meaningful conversations, new collaborations, and bold ideas that will shape the future of AI across the continent.
This year's gathering is even more special as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of Data Science Nigeria. For a decade, we have worked to democratise AI knowledge, nurture world-class talent, and build an ecosystem where Africans are not just users of AI, but creators of transformative solutions.
To every participant travelling from across Africa and beyond: Ẹ káàbọ̀. Welcome to Lagos. Welcome to Nigeria.

On 21st July, we were honored to be in the room with the leadership of the @gatesfoundation for a discussion hosted by @RwandaICT and @c4ir_rwanda, at @norrskenEA, on Rwanda's AI ambitions and a lively engagement with the innovation ecosystem.
During the session, @BillGates pointed out that while venture capital and data are major factors, the lack of GPUs is a distinct and significant bottleneck. He noted that even major tech giants like @Microsoft, which handles massive computing infrastructures, constantly face concerns from teams complaining that they do not have sufficient GPUs. He emphasized that whether you are operating a startup or a university, the lack of access to GPUs will hold you back.
This is exactly the gap AISCA exists to close. Through discounted GPU access, we're working to make sure African startups, researchers, innovators and institutions aren't left renting their way into the AI economy from the outside, but building the infrastructure to own their place in it. That's the shift we're pushing for, from Africa as a consumer of AI tools built elsewhere, to Africa as a creator of the models, systems, and talent that shape what comes next.
We were also proud to see one of our compute grantees, @DUmuganda, on the panel, CEO Audace Niyonkuru joined the conversation alongside Bill Gates, speaking to what it takes for AI to truly benefit Rwanda and Africa; open datasets, local languages, and models as digital public goods.

What does it take for AI to truly benefit Rwanda and Africa? Open datasets, local languages & models as digital public goods. That was our message as CEO @AudaceNiyonkuru joined @BillGates on a panel on AI & innovation, at this week's convening hosted by @RwandaICT & @c4ir_rw

📢Our First Compute Grant Recipients Are Live!
We are excited to introduce the first grantees of the AISCA Compute Grant and Technical Assistance Program, spotlighting just a few today, with more coming over the next couple of days.
These aren't just promising innovators and researchers. They are building AI solutions that speak to Africa's real needs, in its own languages, for its own people.
@pindoio (Rwanda) is using AI to deliver on the promise of financial inclusion. Many of their customers don't own a smartphone, can't read a banking app, or live far from the nearest branch, so instead of forms or a trip to town, they simply speak, in their own dialect, to securely access financial services by voice. That unlocks real change across Rwanda's peri-urban and rural areas underserved by traditional banking. With 4 H200 GPUs over 24 weeks, @pindoio is putting compute to work as a jobs pipeline: hiring AI and speech engineers, African-language linguists, voice actors and conversation designers to build the platform, creating dignified new income for young Africans who run it day to day.
@DUmuganda (Rwanda) is tackling one of the biggest barriers to inclusive AI: nearly half of the internet's most-visited sites are in English, yet across a continent of roughly 2,000 languages only a minority of people speak it. They are expanding access to information for underserved language groups, Kinyarwanda, Shona and Swahili by building rich voice and language datasets. With 4 H200 GPUs over 24 weeks, the compute unlocks jobs for engineers and linguists, pays the data workers who build these much-needed datasets, and brings whole populations online in the language they actually think and live in.
Prof. Stephen moore (@UCCGH_Official, Ghana) is building the language foundation. Ghanaian AI has been missing: a 500+ hour parallel speech corpus and benchmark for recognition and translation across Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani and Fante, so healthcare solutions reach people in their own language. With 1 H200 GPU over 24 weeks, his work creates new roles in research and data annotation, drawing in students and linguists, and puts voice technology within reach of users far beyond the lab.
Look closely and you'll see the same pattern across every grant: compute unlocking opportunity that ripples outward, jobs in the innovator's team, jobs through the building of the AI tool, systemic shifts in the wider ecosystem, and ultimately an inclusive adoption of AI across Africa🚀
Cohort 0 brings together 20 grantees across Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and more, building small language models, advancing products in finance and healthcare and developing foundational climate research to support our continent's food security. Together, they will receive ~34 H200 GPUs worth $1,251,480 in compute value on the open market.
