At 10:30 pm last night, reports that @odisha_police detained Dr Randall Sequeira, doctor to Adivasi communities, and Laxman Naik, leader of affected villages opposing @Vedanta_Group’s mining in Niyamgiri and Sijimali. Their whereabouts are still unknown, no access to a lawyer.
NEW | Vedanta seems to be attempting to revive its stalled Niyamgiri bauxite mining project despite the Gram Sabhas’ rejection of mining in 2013, raising concerns that the Odisha government may be using the criminal justice system to weaken tribal resistance and clear the way for corporate interests. @Ayaskant_Das reports. frontline.thehindu.com/envir…

I agree that journalists have the right to report, and the public have the right to protest. The anger is stemming from the fact that several journalists or rather their organisations, do not support the right to protest, and instead have systematically villainised the protestors. Yes, we can condemn the heckling. We can ask the protesters to stop behaving like this. At the same time, I hope these reporters (and many of them seniors) are coming back to their Newsrooms and strongly asking why they should bear the brunt for all editorial decisions and why things are not changing

Was watching Kerala Assembly debates in the background while doing something else, and G Sudhakaran went from the Mahabharata to Hemingway to Epicureanism to an indirect dig at Pinarayi Vijayan. Honestly, the Assembly vids deserve a bigger audience. Where else do you get this much intellectual range, political drama and entertainment in one sitting?

For many of us journalists, John Brittas has become over the years one of the first people we call when we face harassment from the state. He has stood up for journalists and others facing oppression, and has been a strong voice of the Opposition. Today, he was dragged into a police bus while protesting, assaulted, and dumped on the roadside. Solidarity with you @JohnBrittas. If this is how the police treat an elected MP, imagine what an ordinary citizen faces.
Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas was brutally attacked by the Delhi Police. He was later dropped by the roadside, visibly injured and in distress. DELHI POLICE HAS CROSSED ALL LIMITS!

"You guys don't realise the power you hold." An editor said this at a workshop when I was at Mint. "A newspaper is good for wrapping sardines after two days." A journo told me this recently. It was his teacher's advice against getting attached to the job or the stories. 🧵

On Sept 23, The Indian Express ran a story on its front page. 14 times in ten months, two Election Commissioners objected on record to steps taken by their own Commission. Ritika Chopra and Damini Nath reported it. Today's protest in Delhi began there. Not a comma in that story is mine. But I head video in Kerala for the same paper, so I'm biased. Still, thinking about the people who are on the streets in Delhi today, and that it began on the front page of a newspaper, makes me think again and again about what that editor said that day to a bunch of us who were starting out.

Almost every day now, I see young people, mostly in small towns, doing journalism worn down by things that are not their doing. And there are "senior" journalists who feed them the sardine line. I want them to remember that the Express front page is 17 days old today. It has outlived the sardines. It will be remembered long after today's protestors go home. It will likely outlive even the guy who told me the sardine line :)

The great Hyderabad police enforcing perfect law in a imperfect society. @CPHydCity next time get your SWAT teams, some tanks, some helicopters as you have declared war on these kids.
Hyderabad: Santosh Nagar Police launched a late-night drive against youths found roaming without any apparent reason within the PS limits. Several youths were taken for counselling and warned against unnecessary late-night loitering. A video from the drive shows some youths running after spotting the police, while officers chase and catch them in a dramatic scene. @habeeb_masood

Last month a top cardiologist told my team that he is upset that we didnt book him and wife to Paris. So stopped using. Another wants us to pay 15L for his conference so he can recco product to his hospital. Yet another is upset that a sales girl is no more attending his OT. Send her not him. Another roadblocks procurement at govt hospital where he is HOD until we pay for a trial at his private hospital. (In that govt hospital 5 mothers are dying every month due to lack of our device)

Do you know about a poetry festival, one that has run for close to eight years, one that invites 100 poets every time, and has never once invited a woman in Kerala? What my next guest on Sora could not get past was not the women who were left out but the poets who kept turning up and never once asked why. And then one evening the students at her college put on a Sufi night, Sameer Binsi sang, her novel came out the next day, there was a Sufi dance at the launch, and that was all it took, slowly, the way a small fire takes the wind, it became the only thing Kerala was talking about. I asked her what exactly is the problem with a woman writing about Sufism, and we discussed the way a woman's 'home' disappears after marriage, why she cannot stand the word 'marumakal' (daughter-in-law), about the girls who dance wearing a hijab during Onam in protest against Kanthapuram and then promptly get shouted at when they get home, and about why she thinks no political party in this state will touch the question of a Muslim woman's inheritance laws. A woman who also says the first feminist she ever met was her own father, a woman who had three children before she turned 30, who read her books with those children climbing over her. A woman who spent the last month on every television channel in Kerala taking the abuse and the support in equal measure, and who still gets up early and sits at her own kitchen table, to write: Shabnam Noorjahan.

Everyone in Kerala, unless they are not living in a cave, may have seen at least one reel by now that either praises or trashes Shabnam Noorjahan. This is probably her most candid talk, about how she ended up in the place where she is now. PS: If you like such content about everything Kerala, consider subscribing Indian Express Malayalam! I head IE Malayalam vids now.
