Only 6% tree cover remaining — these are the alarming figures raised during the conversation with the Road Department. Pune is getting hotter. Our water needs are rising. And we are destroying the very trees that help us survive. Think about it. More concrete means more heat. More heat means greater dependence on ACs, more water consumption and greater pressure on our already stressed water resources. Pune received substantial rainfall, yet we are still facing water cuts. So why are we continuing to destroy green cover, increase concretisation and ignore the long-termoʻ consequences? 🌳 Trees are not decoration. Yesterday, I attended Santosh Pandit’s court proceedings, and honestly, what I witnessed was deeply disturbing. Citizens go to the police with evidence, complaints and even proof of violence — yet sometimes, the police won’t even register an NC. But in this case, a complaint appears after 15 days, with a woman being made the complainant. Who is the complainant? And what happened during those 15 days? If Section 35(1) of the BNS can be invoked on the possibility of a future offence, then where was the same law when citizens — including women and a teenager — were detained for simply questioning tree cutting and documenting it? This is not just about Santosh Pandit. It is about a much bigger question: Is the law really equal for everyone? We stand with Santosh Pandit.
