Neoliberalism, trickle down economics, the Chicago school of economics call it what you will, it is no longer the high alter of intellectual thinking, it has been exposed as a fraud, possibly the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on the British people. As my friend Stewart rather brilliantly explains. 👇👇👇Those about to rewrite monetary policy in this country would serve themselves well to study it carefully.
15 years ago I wrote "The God That Failed" for @NewStatesman, on the logic of neoliberalism, how it was behind many of the challenges Britain then faced after the 2008 Crash, & giving some pointers on how Labour should respond. I thought now would be a decent time to dig it out.

Serving notice on one income revenue in favour of a more lucrative “temporary” housing option. Asif Aziz’s may feel, it’s nothing personal, it’s just business but say that to those losing their home. Landlords all over the Capital are offloading in response to the Renters’ Rights bill. This bill was designed to safeguard tenants not make them homeless and paying more, which it inevitably will. @JoshGD @FT

Fabulous piece 👏 Also the trashing of The Elephant & Castle market with traders treated appallingly by Delancey developers. Many cast to the winds. Others accepted places that they said at the time would be unviable and are! @LatinElephant doing amazing advocacy work still!!

Good thread about great swathes of the Country impoverished & hollowed out. We need a levelling up project to the same extent as the reunification of East & West Germany. The UK is that unequal. Labour should have come into office with a plan.
It still baffles me that Labour do not seem to understand what should be their central mission: vast swathes of provincial Britain, especially towns and small cities, are run down, economically hollowed out, and with a decayed social fabric. Sorting that should be a top priority

As someone said to me recently, universities impoverish themselves and the towns and cities they're meant to be part of by attacking arts and humanities subjects @UCU @UniversitiesUK @timeshighered

The current rate of inflation is about 3%. My rent has increased by 5.76% and my service charge by 8.98%. Talk to me again about how shared ownership is affordable housing. @mtpennycook @MayorofLondon @tomcopley

Social cleansing of areas doesnt just affect housing & shops, the displacement of people destroys the long term, lovingly built-up networks of political organising & many & varied cultures of struggle Don't see this talked about much. Why so many parts of London are boring now🤷

Wrote about Criterion Capital's large-scale eviction of tenants, which some residents told me was being done to make way for the move-in of temporary accommodation residents. A sort of inverse-gentrification driven by 'guaranteed rent' in the TA sector. as.ft.com/r/5f0d091d-cb14-48…

Women from Afghanistan have been banned from education by Taliban for 4+ years. One beats every odd. Gets accepted to a UK university. Overcomes 1,000 obstacles. And then the UK denies her a visa. Deeply shameful, @ShabanaMahmood. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2j…
