A lot to unpack here. Anthropic is burying some hard truths in careful political language. Some initial reads: 1) Anthropic verifies that none of the jailbreaks provided a capability beyond what many other models, including Chinese models, could do.
Claude Fable 5 will be available again globally tomorrow. After a series of productive conversations with the US government, we're redeploying the model with a new set of classifiers to target and block more cybersecurity tasks. In the near term, some routine tasks like coding and debugging will fall back to Opus 4.8. We’ll continue to refine these classifiers over the coming weeks to reduce false positives and better distinguish genuine misuse from legitimate requests. We’ve also begun drafting a consensus framework—with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other Glasswing partners—for assessing the severity of AI jailbreaks and how AI developers should respond to them. We invite other industry partners and model providers to join us in this effort. Finally, we’re scaling up our collaboration with the US government on model testing and safeguards. This will include pre-release access to models and safeguards for evaluation, information sharing on jailbreaks and misuse, and dedicated resources for joint research. Thank you to our users for your patience, and to our partners across the government, industry, and the research community who worked alongside us to make Fable 5 available again. WOW! IT'S HAPPENING: the Steering Council posted their "intent to accept PEP 703", in other words to allow for a version of #Python without the #GIL. @colesbury's heroic effort to prove nogil is feasible will be paying off. Now the real work begins! discuss.python.org/t/a-steer… – at Poznan, Poland

The missing dimension of happiness. Diminishin returns on income mean that America needs to close it's metal deficit if it wants to achieve Finnish happiness levels
Americans often don't realize how relatively happy and rich the country is, despite its issues. (Yes, the chart is adjusted for purchasing power differences.)

As differential privacy is used in industry and the public sector we are learning what it can and cannot do. In Jul 2022, we organized a workshop to discuss topics pertaining to privacy and its implications in the design of industry-grade systems. (1/4) arxiv.org/abs/2304.06929

Happy to present my talk "Unveiling Secrets in Binaries using Code Detection Strategies" at @reconmtl. I showcase heuristics to navigate large binaries & find key code locations in malware and commercial applications. I also give a deobfuscation training: recon.cx/2023/trainingSoftwa…

This morning I was hacking the new ChatGPT API and found something super interesting: there are over 80 secret plugins that can be revealed by removing a specific parameter from an API call. The secret plugins include a "DAN plugin", "Crypto Prices Plugin", and many more.

The ML community is fond of adopting methods from safety & security engineering. But the rampant co-opting and misuse of established terms and techniques (e.g., “safety”, red teaming) is counterintuitive to actual safety. So we wrote a paper on it: docs.google.com/viewer?url=h…
